(That's fun to say with the acronym expanded. "Plot? What Plot?" What "Plot? What Plot?")
I've been working on a Severus/Sirius/Regulus PWP for about two months now, which is the first smut I've tried to write. I think that perhaps a threesome was the wrong way to break into the business, and I should have spent some time leveling up first. Too many limbs to keep track of. Running out of pronouns. Have to keep asking myself "now, in all those paragraphs where we followed Severus's internal monologue, how much external-world time has passed? Was it a reasonable just-a-few-seconds, or ought Regulus and Sirius have gone on to the post-coital cigarette by now?"
But frustrating as that is, that's not the real problem. The problem is that in merely ~2200 words of what was supposed to be slightly angsty pr0n, I have managed to imply or directly state all of the following:
Severus
...is gobsmacked to find himself desired by anyone, for whatever reason. He is both boggled and compelled by the idea that Regulus would not only willingly suck him, but apparently really get off on it.
...instantly developed a liking for Regulus's pleasure sounds. Some part of him is clamouring for a repeat ASAP and maybe we could enter negotiations for a daily show please and thank you.
...is scared by the admiring, yearning, lustful looks from both Sirius and Regulus, but he likes them. No, rly.
...likes Regulus more than he admits to.
...likes Sirius way more than he admits to, because he at least knows he has positive feelings for Regulus, even if he's blandly naming them "protectiveness" and "fondness".
...gets suspicious he is stuck in the middle of a power play between Sirius and Regulus.
...gets pissed off at Sirius, partly on Regulus's behalf, when he (thinks he) figures out that it seems to be Regulus in the middle, not him.
...is actually way overthinking things.
...is willing, even eager to do (sexual) power battle with Sirius, because those are terms he readily thinks in.
...is still too wounded from the fiasco with Lily and wouldn't know his own tender desire if it bit him, so he sublimates it into "I'm going to get my own back by fucking you, because although that's what I really want to do, I have to convince myself there's some other reason for it."
Sirius
...didn't actually have anything more detailed or long-term in mind than "I wonder if I can get Snape to give in to what I want." Sirius does like to set himself up to be "top dog", but when Severus remarks that Sirius is as Slytherin as the rest of the Blacks, he's "put his keen and penetrating mind to the task and come to the wrong conclusion".
...would not have been able to invent and enact the crafty strategy Severus is probably picturing. He lacks the necessary foresight, especially pitted against a much more cunning intellect like Severus's, and subtlety and caution are, shall we say, not his long suits. (To mash up two quotes, Sirius wouldn't know a subtle plan if it danced naked wearing Dobby's tea cozy and singing "subtle plans are here again".)
...would never have dreamed of coldly calculating a way to use and hurt someone like that, anyway, especially his own little brother. Sirius may not be very sensitive to other people's emotions, but he's just your everyday thoughtless prat of a teenage boy, not a gratuitously cruel, evil arsehole.
...likes Severus a lot more than he admits to, too, which comes out in his less guarded moments.
...thinks he just wants to gloat over seeing Snape all undone and wanting him while being unburdened by any reciprocating response, but his own body, subconscious, and heart all know better than that.
...is completely sincere when he calls Severus "beautiful".
Regulus
...also seems to like Severus a whole lot. Sirius thinks he is just taunting Severus with his speech about "oh, he wants you, Snape", but maybe that's truer than Sirius knows.
...has apparently been involved in incestuous sex with Sirius before. When, why?
...really does desire Severus, but thinks the idea is doomed, so he's mostly trying (naively) to bank up for future status; he (thinks he) knows where he and Severus are heading.
...is, therefore, being a twisted version of practical, detached from emotional involvement, while Severus and Sirius are both lounging on the banks of Denial when in fact they are soooo OTP baby.
...gets foreshadowing of his relative-future theft of the locket.
...comes out too "sex toy" so far, which would have been fine in a PWP, but with all that other stuff going on, he needs a more substantial thread. He's a person with thoughts and feelings, dammit. (For brave Regulus!)
So another 600 words of just trying to keep my thoughts straight. The original ~1200 words that started this whole thing was an orphaned middle which needed a beginning and ending. 1000 words later the "episode" has an ending (still needs a beginning), but it's now a larger orphaned middle that begs a framework of its own: How did things get this way? and How are they resolved?
tl;dr: This was just supposed to be a little nosh of PWP. Whahappa??
P.S. Yes, two months to produce 2200 words. I keep tellin' y'all I'm not a writer.
