Teh Big Slash meme |
Read and/or write? | Read, mostly. |
Since when? | Last August. I dabbled a little bit in reading LotR slash before that, but most of it put me off. |
How did you stumble into slash? | The first story I actually really read and enjoyed was "The Folly of Starlight", a long Elrond/Legolas fic. But when I actually picked it up was when I was reading discussion and such on Deathly Hallows. I started dipping into fic, and of course, tons and tons of it is slash. |
Your first fandom and pairing: | In terms of actually getting involved in anything, Harry Potter, and Severus/Sirius. |
The first person you told about your new hobby: | um, my fiance? He was kind of sitting in the room at the time. |
The fandoms you read: | Just Harry Potter. I guess you could consider me to be in MST3K fandom, but that's not a highly ficced fandom, and I don't have any interest in MST3K slash anyway (omgwut?). |
The fandoms you write: | Harry Potter. |
Your favourite pairings: | Severus/Lily, Severus/Sirius, Severus/Regulus, Sirius/Regulus, Harry/Draco is growing on me, sometimes Severus/Harry, Severus/James when it's not abusive. |
Favourite genres: | Humour/parod/satire (bring me your sarcasm, your smartassery, your huddled masses of puns yearning to snark free), angst, smut, romance (but not always fluff), drama, hurt/comfort sometimes. |
Least favourite pairings: | Dumbledore/anyone, Severus/Hermione. I'm pretty indifferent to a lot of stuff I don't specifically like, though. |
Least favourite genres: | None really, although I'm not that into suspense/mystery. |
What makes a story good? | Voices that "sit" right, inventive plot, handling cliche devices in ways that make me say "okay, I can see the cliche, but I'm going to go along with you anyway", emotional lines that twist my gut in a good way. |
What makes a story bad? | Poor grammar and spelling, bizarre plot and characterization ideas not done for comedic effect. |
The best author: | I'm going to skip these best/worst questions. I'm not qualified. |
Why? | |
The best story you've ever read:
The worst author: | |
Why? | |
The worst story you've ever read:
The best story you have written: | Hmm. Probably "Care and Feeding of Severus Snape", although it's not really a story. |
The worst story you have written: | Maybe "Not Every Flavour". Too flat, too gratuitously emo. |
Do you leave feedback? | Yes, although not in a 100% ratio or anything. |
Do you get feedback? | A little. I only have ~50 mutual friends on LJ and I know very well that having me friended doesn't necessarily mean reading me (since I don't read everyone I friend either). |
Do you have a favorite kink? | Define "kink". There are things that make me go OMGYES that are not "kinks" in the sense of being thought sexually deviant. In the strict definition, probably not. I'm pretty vanilla. (Which is not to say that I mind kinky stuff, just that there isn't one I specifically seek out.) |
Does something squick you? | Rape, torture/abuse, scat/watersports, bestiality, necrophilia, mpreg, preg in general really. |
Is slash simply sex? | What? I define slash as "depicting homosexual attraction or activity between characters not canonically homosexual". So, I guess no, not simply sex. |
Is slash a way of life? | Um, no? |
How much time do you spend reading/writing? | Hours a day reading, probably. I should pare my lists down. I get into "time debt" and can never dig myself out. Writing, not that much. Mainly because of all the reading. But also because, you know, I can't really write. I am not one of those people who gets ideas easily. ^_- |
Do you have RL friends who slash? | RL acquaintances, more like. Of the "people I see once a year" variety. |
Have you made online friends through slash? | Eh, they're more acquaintances too. |
Do you think slash is just a phase? | No, although I suppose I might stop liking it someday. |
Could you simply stop slashing? | Probably not. |
What do you think about... |
Ratings G to PG-13 | Sure! |
Ratings R to NC-17 | Sure! |
AUs | Sure! Although it depends on exactly what sort of AU. I am usually fine with "what ifs" that branch off a certain event happening in a different way (allohistory, in other words), but ones which are just like "let's mix up the characters in wacky ways just for fun!" aren't my cuppa. |
ARs | Depends. Usually not. I read Harry Potter fiction because I like seeing those characters in their natural setting. Putting the same characters in a different setting and doing it well, with them still recognizably themselves, is tricky. |
Crackfics | Sure! Well, mostly. Clever crack which is tongue-in-cheek I usually like. Crack which is just fucking random for the hell of it annoys me. |
Porn | Sure! |
Angst | Sure! |
Mush | Rarely. |
Love | Sure! |
Romance | Sure! (but see mush. I like depth of passion.) |
BDSM | No thanks. I don't mind if a little of it turns up but I don't go for fic which is centered around this as its primary motif. |
Darkfics | Sometimes. Depends exactly what. |
Deathfics | No opinion. I don't mind "character death" per se. |
Non consensual/rape | No thank you. |
Rape recovery | If the rape was offscreen, maybe. |
FPS | Is the default for me. |
RPS | Kinda creeps me out. |
RPG | No opinion; I don't do it. |
First times | Ohhh yes please. |
Established relationships | Depends on the characters. |
Threesomes | No objection. |
m/m slash | Duuurrrrr-hay. |
femmeslash | Not my cuppa. |
Slashing a children's book/movie | What, like Harry Potter? ;) |
Chanslash | Sure! |
Explicit sex | Sure! |
The importance of charactarization | Paramount. |
OOCness | (assuming when not for humour) Depends. Sometimes it's still in a weird sort of harmony with the character and I will be okay with it. Sometimes it makes me *facepalm* and close that tab. |
Canon | Sure! |
Fanon | Sure! |
Cliches | Depends. Some of them are guilty pleasures (emo!Severus). Others are eyerolls (pureblood-manor!Severus, although I can see why people might have extrapolated this scenario). Others make me want to hit things with a stick (cutting!Severus). And then there's the primal scream of ohgodwhy (veela!Draco). |
Supernatural | Sure! (although HP is already a fantasy fandom, in essence) |
MPREG | Ew, no. |
Wingfics | What? |
Genderfuck | Sometimes. Define this term, please. There's "what if so and so was born another sex in the first place", then there's "so and so gets turned into another sex in the fic", and then there's regular transsexuality or even just gender-play and all that goes along with that. "Gets turned into another sex" takes special handling as it is a pretty cliched premise, I think. |
Crossovers | Ugh, no, except for humour/parody, and even then most of the time no. |
Group Slut Fics | Umm... what? |
Incest | No problem for me between relatives of similar ages, although it's not something I seek for itself. (Sirius/Regulus I do seek for itself, but because of the characters, not specifically because it is incest. I am okay with Fred/George, for instance, but add Ron in and I'm not interested anymore. Parent/child incest especially no, although oddly, Harry/Sirius doesn't bother me.) |
May/December | Ew, no. |
Het pairings in a slash fic | No problem. |
Plot | Sure! |
PWPs | Sure! |
WIPs | No problem. In fact, I'm a lot less daunted by a WIP that I can catch up on in small chunks rather than a big splat of a large finished fic. |
LJ fics and communities | Hi, um, duh? |
Mailing lists | Not a member of any. |
Big Name Fans | Beats me who they are. |
Politics in a slash story | Um, you'd have a hard time squeezing that into Harry Potter, I think. |
Religion in a slash story | Doesn't bother me, although if a fic was specifically about someone's journey to faith in the Christian god I probably wouldn't be interested. I am not offended by passing references or where one of several characters is made out to be quite religious or something. (Interesting how Christianity is usually assumed. Shinto!Sirius and SanterĂa!Hermione, please. ;) I would actually get very annoyed if people were made out to be Pagan in a Harry Potter fic, but that's because it seems to clash so much with the magical system as presented.) |
Wake up Gay | lol. A little silly. I prefer it if people don't try to justify the choices in the fic, and just get on with the story itself. I know slash is already non-canony; my disbelief is permanently suspended on that. You don't need to convince me "it could happen". |
And finally.... |
Your pet peeve: | Poetically pretentious summaries that don't actually tell me a goddamn thing about what happens in the fic. And now that I've mentioned Paganism, seeing depictions of regular Muggle magic rituals. Dipping into real-world herbal lore can be done with care (although again, a Potterverse potion is really not like a Muggle concoction, thankyouverymuch, says Severus), but it annoys me no end to see Potterverse wizards doing things that look like they came out of a Llewellyn book, or even a Capall Bann one. ("Three Books of Occult Philosophy", maybe. ;) ) |
Your advice to new slashers: | I have not been around long enough to have any. |
Your slash wish list: | (this space intentionally left blank) |
The best slash archive: | Again, I can't talk about these sorts of things. Thin Line has a special place in my heart. |
The worst slash arcive:
