The tree sap thing is based on a personal experience in my own past. Friend and I didn't want to go to our mothers for help, so we used what we could find in the garage, and Ivory laundry soap turned out to work best (although not ideally, hence the depiction of having to work at it). Actually what works like a charm on tree sap is turpentine, although it's not good for skin or hair. In any event, I'm not sure Lily was quite old enough to fully appreciate the pleasure of his hair at the time. ;)
