I noticed it's been well over 3 months since I made a post here, so I'm just showing a sign of life. I haven't had much to post about here since I've basically dropped out of Harry Potter fandom for various reasons, was never particularly active in Doctor Who or Tolkien, and nobody knows about Takin' Over the Asylum or Monkey Island here... so really all I've been doing is occasionally adding to my TOtA art recs list for no real reason since no one looks at it anyway.

I've just renamed this account from shyfoxling to [personal profile] arcanetrivia to match renaming I've done on other services like DeviantArt, Tumblr, Pillowfort, and Archive of Our Own. I will not be renaming my LiveJournal [livejournal.com profile] shyfoxling to match because I don't want to give them money on principle and also don't feel safe doing so.

I'm on Mastodon now if you're into that kind of thing: https://blorbo.social/@arcanetrivia I have no idea at this point what is likely to be the majority sort of posts there, since I'm not likely to make any posts of my own (I never had a Twitter account because I just don't have a need for posting that kind of microblog stuff). Probably not as random and silly as my Tumblr, but likely there will be fandom-related stuff, which right now largely means Monkey Island. I don't know if any of my other interests like Paganism or woo stuff will show up.

As you may have noticed if you're reading this on LJ, I've turned off commenting on the crossposts. I am waffling over whether to stop crossposting entirely (except for the occasional PSA). For the moment I am not in a rush to entirely delete my journal, because it occurred to me that 1. that breaks memories links and it always annoys me when that happens, and 2. there are still some fandom communities here I want to check on now and again that are members-locked; but no guarantees on what might happen in the future.

As I see people and communities make their own announcements about moving to Dreamwidth, I am gradually removing them from my reading filter on LJ and adding them on DW (not unfriending, just tweaking of reading lists).

Everyone's probably heard by now about how the Russians are coming, the Russians are coming -- that is, that LJ physically moved servers to Russia as of about 2 weeks ago -- but if not, here's a few relevant links:

http://siderea.livejournal.com/1330197.html
http://siderea.livejournal.com/1330106.html
http://rahirah.livejournal.com/695706.html (with more links to further reading)

As for me, I imported both my journals to Dreamwidth and started crossposting from here to LJ somewhere pushing seven years ago, so no change for me there, although I will be chuffed if people currently reading me on LJ decide to start reading me on DW instead. I don't have any immediate plans to delete my LJ entirely, or delete all its posts ([personal profile] frameacloud says [livejournal.com profile] ljsec still works for doing that task in bulk), or even to stop crossposting or turn off commenting on LJ for right now.

If anyone is looking for me on DW, I think this should be fairly obvious because of my crossposting footers (though this post is not a crosspost), but I'm [personal profile] shyfoxling over there as well.

ETA: If I have you in my circle on DW, I will usually be changing my filters so as to read you over there instead of here. (There are some exceptions where people get lots more/different comments on LJ.)

Browsing through my extant tags to see if I already had one along the lines of the "ponderings" I tagged my last post with, I turned up some amusing kinda nonstandard ones (vs. things like character names, ships, and genres), many of which I'd forgotten I'd used:

brb drooling, counting things ah-ah-ah, death by pun, dood i'm so blogging this, dude am i crazy or what (the lone post with this tag may be amusing to fans of interactive fiction), library blithering no one cares about, madness? this is fandom, moichandising!, now that's rather saucy innit, oh us crazy snapefen, overanalysis our speciality, pack-rat much?, plotless random imagery, punctuation please, ravenclaw madness, say what now?, show us your wits, sit in the corner and rust, unf unf unf, wish i'd thought of that, ye aulden days, you get to drink from the firehose!, your thoughts on yaoi

I'm considering renaming this journal to snarkfaery, even though doing so would mean giving LJ money. The username isn't already taken on LJ, DW, IJ, dA, FFN, or AO3. If I Google it there is a "snarkfairy" (so spelled) already on Twitter, but I don't use that, and just about all the other hits seem to already be related to me through "some kind of snark faery", which is what I have my "name" field set to on the journal sites.

Hmm. ponder.

Hey, it'd only be the third time I've renamed this account :P

Unlike every other time this kind of thing happens, I appear to be one of the people currently affected by lost comment notifications. I turned LJ inbox notification back on so I can get them that way (normally I have that turned off and only get by email because I hate having one more damn thing to have to periodically clean out), but I may have missed something in the past few days or a week. If you've been waiting for a response from me on something and wondering why I'm ignoring you, please link me.

If anyone out there has been vaguely interested in creating a Dreamwidth account but not interested enough to bother to look at [site community profile] dw_codesharing to get a code:

...we're going to try a little experiment. For the week of February 21 - February 28, creating an account on Dreamwidth will not require an invite code. You'll be able to register an account without needing a code -- just by visiting the account creation page.

It occurs to me that my profile has hardly changed in the two years + two months since I originally wrote it, and it's not only kind of dull but somehow smells "off" to me now.

What's one thing you would put in my profile, if you were me?

I've decided the task of trying to chase down all my posts with pictures and change their links to point to picture hosting on my website instead of on ScrapBook is just too big a task to bother. I figure most people aren't looking back far enough that they'd notice anyway, but since I am still alive (e.g. not abandoning LJ entirely or anything, just letting a paid account expire), if you should come across a broken image in one of my posts and would like to see what once was there (I know there are some visual gags in [livejournal.com profile] babb_chronicles, [livejournal.com profile] lolpotters, and summary posts here), I can possibly hack that for you.

I'll probably make a repost of a few icons that I don't now feel are utter crap, just to have them in an accessible spot.

Yeah, well. I got problems. What of it? I finally felt in my gut that grandiose names like "esmestrella" and "elethian" aren't for me. [livejournal.com profile] shyfoxling (shy foxling) technically exceeds my limit of two syllables, but I think it's simple enough and something that's not that likely to go out of my mental style.

(Will change Dreamwidth name as soon as that function is available.)

I saw [livejournal.com profile] titti do this, so I thought it might possibly be helpful. My reading/posting habits:

LiveJournal

I still consider this my primary journal. It's the place I have the most friends and communities. I read it as often as possible given work and stuff, on the average once a day (if I let it go more than a couple of days the backlog gets too big). I post everything here (unless there's something that's LJ-specific like technical issues).

InsaneJournal

I read this on about the same schedule, although since I have about a third the number of friends and comms as on LJ, if time is of the essence it may get the short end of the time stick. I don't have any intention of leaving since there are some friends and a couple comms which, as far as I know, are only on IJ. I post everything there too (again, aside from IJ-specific stuff).

Dreamwidth

Is probably going to get inserted into my daily reading routine the same way, although it will take me a while to sort out who seems to be crossposting everything and therefore can be filtered out of my "need to read on this other site" list, and who, if anyone, has really migrated and needs to be "read [t]here". If you're still crossposting verbatim to LJ I will probably wind up reading you there instead. Once I am out of "setting up shop" mode (which so far has contained posts which are good examples of the "[site]-specific stuff" category) I will probably be crossposting there as well. Not sure yet if I want to try to import the back catalog. I think I've determined that the account as it stands will be primarily for fandom purposes, although there are some people from my [livejournal.com profile] starlightforest flist who are testing out the waters there and I'm not sure where that is going to fit into things, or whether I will want to create a separate account for that (joy).

JournalFen, Inksome, etc.

Is it not the case that anymore that JournalFen is closed to new accounts? Anyway, no intentions to create journals on these or Commiejournal (never heard of that before!) or Scribbld.

I don't particularly care where you read me or comment on my posts. I get the notifications anyway and can reply, so no big whoop. Please yourself.

Oh hey! Looks like the character list on FFN was updated to include a Lily E. as well as a Lily P. (granted, this might have happened any time in the last three months and I wouldn't have noticed.) Yay, my school-era Sev/Lily fics don't have to be with a slightly impossible person anymore!

Stuff about the mysterious random friendings by Russian-language journals. Apparently there is a rash of bots. See http://nympholept.livejournal.com/tag/russian+bots.

I had deleted this (that? the previous) entry, but:

'scuse me while I try on a layout. I hope I can get everything back the way it was if I don't like it. (Not that it's very likely anyone is going to look directly at my journal in the 10 minutes it'll take me to do this.) It would be cool if LJ had the ability to save "presets" (including any custom changes, that is) so you could switch between them and didn't have to do it from scratch every time. (I can see that being resource-intensive, but maybe only allow a small library, like three?)

[livejournal.com profile] fenm squeezed in a reply anyway:
Yeah, I wish they had presets, too. I also wish more of their layouts had a link for "earlier entries" at the TOP of the page was well as the bottom. If I'm going more than 20 entries back, I don't want to have to keep scrolling down EVERY PAGE... d-: I like the layout, though. Yay, young Snape!

(Sure, "not very likely" except for [livejournal.com profile] fenm who must, like, have set a subscription to get an IM every time I post a new entry, lol. ;) )

What you desire could be done by putting in a CSS override, I'm sure. I'm just not savvy enough with CSS in general, never mind learning the LJ-specific dialect, to do it myself.

I liked the layout okay in general, but I really like having the "edit tags", "edit post", etc. links on the main journal view, rather than having to click through to an individual entry page to get to them, and I couldn't be arsed to figure out the CSS to put them in.

The "young Severus" layout in question can be gotten at http://janine42584.livejournal.com/43103.html if anyone is interested.
