I pray for an animated series one day, something really long and complex, just so I can see an alternate cinematic take on it.

I would like to say "I would actually watch that". I mean, I would; I would give it a chance, at least. But I think it would stand a very good chance of being absolutely horrifying, whereas the movies are merely kind of disappointing, and at least have a good deal of eye-candy. An animated series is either self-limiting (you agree to end the series when the books do, not something American producers are very good at if they think they can still get money), or you have to foray into "new adventures" territory by paying a bunch of screenwriters to write fanfic, which sometimes works out okay, and sometimes is, well, absolutely horrifying.

I don't even want to think about how they might draw some of the characters. They would probably get the Trio reasonably right and Gandalf-types like Dumbledore are an old standard, but if I thought Snape and Draco came off as kind of caricatures in the books, especially earlier on, then hoo baby, I better hold on to my socks.

I saw someone wish elseNet for a BBC series, which I think would be much less likely to turn out screamingly bad. I would definitely watch that. Well, I would pout that we don't have satellite television, wait grumpily for the American DVD issue while watching Brits chatter all over the net about it, and probably build up a collection of LJ icons from a series I hadn't even seen. But hey.

Not always true... Nick currently has a wonderful show called Avatar: The Last Airbender, which, afaik, was intended to be a three season, 61-episode storyline (which is coming to an end--we're in the middle of season three). Yes, they might make more seasons (which would require a whole new plot), but it was planned, and Nick accepted it, as a three season, very limited (much more so than HP) plot.

Besides, while it's true an HP story would be limited to the books, there's a hell of a lot of material in those books! Even if they could do one book a season, that's still seven seasons, which is a fair bit longer than many series get.
