Shortly after Lily's murder, Severus began to notice an increasing feeling of unease whenever he used his wand, like it was distancing itself from him. Foolish though he felt ascribing speech to a tool, he could almost imagine it saying, "I don't know who you are anymore."

Put like that, it had a point; Severus himself wasn't certain the person who had wielded it until now was the one whose muted reflection gazed back at him from the shop's window.

Severus steeled himself and entered. He would begin again with a wand that had never done a Death Eater's work.

yesss. How did he make this journey, into that dark world?

Into it? There's plenty of fic attempting to answer that question, since JKR left it so shadowed. Not a piece of the story I feel competent to tackle yet. ;)

I quite like the idea. At first I thought Snape would be more the kind to keep the wand as yet another way of harboring the guilt "secretly" within himself, but that seems to be more Dumbledore's style.

I don't know that he wouldn't keep it, but I don't think he'd purposely make himself ineffectual by trying to use a wand that wasn't working.

In the first draft of this it did include the idea that he wanted to "burn, break, or bury it", but in the end decided to keep it somewhere.
