fic rec: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (ya rly!)

This person has apparently undertaken to rewrite Deathly Hallows, and so far (Ch. 8) they're doing a very good job of it. Some glaring illogics have been fixed (Fidelius again works like we'd expect it to), dumb things are un-dumbed (Harry lets Hedwig go because he knows it's too dangerous to keep her; "seven Potters" is turned into a simple Muggle-vehicle getaway), action and interminable newspaper articles tightened up, and people given their brains back (LOL), including Voldemort, who in this version has kidnapped (and then killed) Sybill Trelawney so as to finally get the full prophecy from her. The writing style reads like Rowling (thankfully sans the addiction to dashes and ellipses, however *hem hem*) and they've woven in some of the good lines from the book as well.

To be honest, I'm not much of a reader of long stories--Pretty much Harry Potter, and that's it--but I might look into this. There are things I despised about DH, so this might be interesting.

Am I the only one who feels that you could take the entirety of the plot about Dumbledore's past out of DH (say, for the movie), and not alter the plot one whit?

It isn't actually that long (the individual chapters are rather shorter than in the book), but I hear ya. I don't read a lot of long fic either. It takes quite good writing to make me want to bother with anything novel-length. Usually I go "ugh, forget it" right off.

I just skimmed it briefly, looking for differences. It's interesting that while Snape's identified as the one who handed over Trelawney, he's not physically present for that first chapter now. Wonder if he'll end up being good or evil in this version (and how she'll explain his betrayal of Trelawney if he's not evil now.)

He's there, he just doesn't have any lines.

Voldemort paused now and faced the dark haired man whose seat was always at the right of his own. "We will make Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry into the finest institution for the Dark Arts that Europe has ever seen. And you, Severus, will be headmaster."

All eyes at the table turned to Snape, who had been silent and impassive throughout the entire evening's proceedings.


Edit: It seems they are keeping the same basic plot and only changing the "how"s, so far, so I don't think Snape is going to turn out to be evil in this version either.

Oops. That's what I get for skimming too quickly. Still, his role is greatly reduced in this new version. But more culpable in a colleague's death now, as he did hand her over. Or Voldemort thinks he did.

I'll have to read more carefully when I'm awake. Thanks again. Do you know if there's any kind of update system? She says "every Tuesday" but I ahve a hard time remembering what day it is now.....

Well, his role is greatly reduced in that chapter He's already turned up again once when he didn't in the book (Voldy!Vision, or dream rather, gave us a scene with Headmaster Snape). More remains to be seen.

I don't think she's sticking to anything like "Tuesdays". After Chapter 9, or whichever is the last one on that site, she switches to another website for chapters 10 and onward, and they don't have header links there (or indeed internally -- the link to 11 is only at the bottom of 10, etc. annoying). She left me an anon comment on IJ and said she had about 30 chapters of it written but it was not all up. I think she's up to 14? maybe? and then the link to 15 just said "coming soon", or did as of yesterday.
