Title: Undressed Books
Characters: Severus/Lily
Rating: very light PG
Words: 370
Warnings: None
Why I give up: I couldn't figure out how to get them into this situation and didn't even have any clear idea of whether this was meant to be AU. Also, it's just dull and seems to stop dead without being able to go on anywhere.
-------
Lily ran her fingers along the edge of the bookshelf, scanning the titles there. Why was jacket art always so silly? Usually the simplicity of the title embossed in gold or silver was so much better than anything you could hire an artist to draw.
Glancing over her shoulder towards the kitchen, she quickly pulled a dozen or so volumes off the shelf, removed the jackets, and replaced the books carefully in their original order. Much better! She ran her finger lovingly up one of the spines.
Then Lily sensed eyes upon her and turned around sheepishly. Severus was framed in the doorway, two cups of tea in his hands. He had his head cocked slightly to one side and a slight frown on his face. She could almost hear him say just what do you think you are doing to my books?
"I—I just think they look nice with their jackets off." Well! That certainly sounds perfectly normal and reasonable. Lily blushed slightly and turned back to the shelf, grimacing.
Behind her she heard a quiet clinking of china, then a rustle and soft thump of fabric. Puzzled, she turned around again. Severus' coat was now in a pile at his feet. His hair was thrown into stark relief by the whiteness of the shirt beneath, the fabric just thin enough that the light from the kitchen showed up the outline of his body beneath it as he bent to pick up the tea again. Though he had fleshed out somewhat from the frightfully skinny child he had once been, Lily could see that he was still quite thin.
As he handed her her tea, his expression was unusually soft, almost amused, but ultimately unfathomable. Severus outside of black clothing was such an unusual sight that Lily found her look swiftly lengthening into a stare. She hurriedly sat down on the sofa and took a sip of her tea, fixing her gaze over the rim of the cup onto the pile of book jackets.
"I tend to agree," murmured Severus, sitting down far too near her.
"What?" Lily said, trying not to think about tracing her fingers softly up his spine as she had done moments ago to the book.
