Why I give up: Eh. This just bores me. The point of this was to have her catch some amusement or longing, have them meet later, and have him express an emotion that could only possibly be expressed with the mouth, which is wanting to kiss her, like, durhay. But I ain't feelin' it somehow.
-------
Many people are given to express insincere emotions with their mouths that never reach their eyes, such as the ever-popular false smile. Severus was the opposite way: to be able to guess what he was feeling, you would first need to master the subtle skill of reading his eyes, since he rarely expressed anything with his mouth.
Lily noticed that this rule was relaxed somewhat when she was the only other person around. At those times, with luck, she could catch him worrying his lip in confusion while poring over a complex text, opening his mouth slightly in mock indignance at something playfully insulting she'd just said, or even, ever so rarely, smiling his small, gentle smile.
The more people you put in the room, though, the quicker she had to be, for Severus almost instantly suppressed every flash of emotion as though he was ashamed, even terrified (she had noted the irony) that he had been stirred to any reaction at all. In those situations, there was just a moment of opportunity to catch the secrets in his eyes while his mouth stayed set in a straight line.
