I just saw a summary on FFN that mentioned Harry's godmother coming to fetch him when Sirius died. Obviously this is an OC and no such person is mentioned in canon, but it's an interesting idea; godparents usually come in pairs. Who do you think might have been Harry's godmother, if anyone?

Oh, very interesting!

My brain is a bit fuzzy at the moment, but as far as I recall, the books never really mention anyone close to Lily other than her sister and Snape...hmmm. Since I doubt Snape is the godmother (interesting idea though), I can't help but to think it was probably Petunia, if anyone.

Mary Macdonald? Do we even know any women of Lily's generation? Maybe one of the reasons why so many guys had their hearts set on Miss Evans, is because there was a shortage of females? Hm. But remember when Hargid gifted Harry with the photo album? He said something about all the photos coming from Lily and James's friends. I mean, who the hell were these "friends" and why haven't they ever popped up?

I don't think Harry had a godmother, it seems James was making all the choices in the Potter household and I suspect he was just going to wait for Sirius to marry.

Or at lest that's what my post-midnight can come up with. @_@

There's a person on dA who does a series of comics featuring that idea. I enjoy them for the most part even if the godmother is a bit of a mary sue, but it's good overall http://frytka.deviantart.com/

Mary Macdonald is the first name I came up with. She's mentioned twice, and that's the only hint of the rich friendship network Lily must have had before she started speaking to the Marauders.

Alice, maybe? Or, I'm guessing ... someone else who was incapacitated or killed by Voldemort/the Death Eaters, given that she never makes an appearance in Harry's life?

It is not unusual that a parent's sibling be a godparent. Since Sirius was like a brother to James, that made him an obvious pick. Although a horrible one, I would go with Aunt Petunia as the godmother. The godparent provides the upbringing and spiritual guidance of the child should the parents die. Petunia's "spiritual guidance" was repression of the magical.

I'd have to go with Petunia. Even though Lily had friends, I think that she would be the type who would think that blood is thicker than water. Of course, semen is thicker than BOTH, if you want to get technical.... ;)

I would love to see a fic where Snape is the other godparent. Marvelous idea! *giggles*

I don't think that Lily would have been close to Molly Weasley at all (she was in The Order, but older than her, and probably a bit of a personality clash there, IMHO). I would buy Mary McDonald, or even Alice Longbottom (this is actually my strongest preference, probably for the ironic and angsty possibilities).

I'm not so sure about Petunia. There are many indications that Lily and her sister just don't get along at all at that point in her life. In the letter Lily wrote, that Snape later finds, for instance, there is mention of Harry breaking the 'ugly' lamp (or was it vase) that Petunia had sent her for Christmas, and Lily seems amused and glad in the mentioning, almost as though Petunia meant almost nothing to her at that point. I suppose it could just be a case of Rowling doing a poor job at getting her intentions across regarding the relationship (when has that ever happened before? ;-)). But I would assume that the godmother would be a friend she was close to in The Order, rather than her sister.

... I was under the impression that Harry had two Godfathers? It's been so long since I've read the book I couldn't tell you where I got that idea from though. And even though most people have a godmother and a godfather, my sister is one of many people who has two godfathers.

Huh; quite possibly McGonagall.

Actually there a quite a number of them, iirc. However, those tend to be AU fics or Snape-saves-Harry and/or mentor fics. Sorry I can't think of any by title atm.

I just wanted to say that I too planned to dig this up. ;)

And to [livejournal.com profile] elethian-actually both my kids have the same godmother and no godfather because of the circumstances of their baptism so really even though it's not the norm at all, I can absolutely believe they just had Sirius and no one else.

I, too, thought of her, since she's mentioned by Lily as being one of her Gryff female friends.

I would think that just as the occasional woman has a male "maid of honor", I could imagine there might be two godmothers or two godfathers.

There's a lot about Lupin that still remains unknown. 1981-1993 is just a blank slate. Though I think your right about Lupin being one of the "friends", as for the lack of contact. . . there's something very fishy there.

Lupin seemed really loath to admit to Harry that he and James were very close friends. Maybe he still felt angry at the Marauders betrayal of him? Did he feel somewhat responsible about Sirius?

[identity profile] gichigami.livejournal.com 2009-10-26 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Only one of the definitions of godparent. I agree totally that the Potterverse is not religious. In the case of Aunt Petunia, I used the quotation marks because I saw her as bent on breaking Harry's spirit and any inkling of being magical. Sirius certainly raised Harry's spirits, on the other hand.

[identity profile] coyotegoth.livejournal.com 2009-10-27 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not really; more that I think that 1) it's obviously not Molly, or we'd have heard by now, and 2) Dumbledore would have been likely to arrange it that way. (It was almost certainly his idea that McG meet him outside the Dursley's in Book 1 to discuss Harry's future. Coincidence? I think not!)

By the way, this mysteriously inscribed entry (http://sola.livejournal.com/609147.html?thread=2216315#t2216315), with a photo of a page of the guest book at the Cloisters, made me think of you.
