I just saw a summary on FFN that mentioned Harry's godmother coming to fetch him when Sirius died. Obviously this is an OC and no such person is mentioned in canon, but it's an interesting idea; godparents usually come in pairs. Who do you think might have been Harry's godmother, if anyone?

My brain is a bit fuzzy at the moment, but as far as I recall, the books never really mention anyone close to Lily other than her sister and Snape...hmmm. Since I doubt Snape is the godmother (interesting idea though), I can't help but to think it was probably Petunia, if anyone.

I don't think Harry had a godmother, it seems James was making all the choices in the Potter household and I suspect he was just going to wait for Sirius to marry.
Or at lest that's what my post-midnight can come up with. @_@

I'm not so sure about Petunia. There are many indications that Lily and her sister just don't get along at all at that point in her life. In the letter Lily wrote, that Snape later finds, for instance, there is mention of Harry breaking the 'ugly' lamp (or was it vase) that Petunia had sent her for Christmas, and Lily seems amused and glad in the mentioning, almost as though Petunia meant almost nothing to her at that point. I suppose it could just be a case of Rowling doing a poor job at getting her intentions across regarding the relationship (when has that ever happened before? ;-)). But I would assume that the godmother would be a friend she was close to in The Order, rather than her sister.

It's a good question. It's possible Lupin, say, might be one of them, but with him one wonders even more why there's never been any contact between them before. Did Harry just disappear from their point of view on the night of October 31, 1981?

Hm, a plausible idea.

Lupin seemed really loath to admit to Harry that he and James were very close friends. Maybe he still felt angry at the Marauders betrayal of him? Did he feel somewhat responsible about Sirius?

By the way, this mysteriously inscribed entry (http://sola.livejournal.com/609147.html?thread=2216315#t2216315), with a photo of a page of the guest book at the Cloisters, made me think of you.

Erm, if she had been his godmother, I don't see how the point about "he probably told her to do it" follows. I.e. why would it be less likely she'd think of it on her own?
But see below for
