I was reading the entry for OotP Ch 31 at http://hpcompanion.com just now, and I noticed this pull quote under an illustration:

No fewer than four Stunners had shot from the figures around the cabin toward Professor McGonagall. Halfway between cabin and castle the red beams collided with her. For a moment she looked luminous, illuminated by an eerie red glow, then was lifted right off her feet, landed hard on her back, and moved no more. (emphasis mine)

That phrase sound familiar? Yeah. So I decided to search out how many times this sort of language is used in the text. And except for this example and the other one in DH... it isn't. Only Minerva and Severus sustain an injury and then "move no more". McGonagall, of course, we know to have survived her incident with the Stunners.

Well, well.

(I don't think this parallel phrasing was an intentional hint, esp. since JKR claims not to reread her own work, but it's sure something to add to the pile of fiddly, meaning-stretched details if one wishes to cuddle a "Snape survived" theory. ;) )

I still maintain that JKR's subconscious wanted to write one story, and her ego plus corporate handlers influenced another. what we got was a blend. so, HAH! more evidence!

Hey, I'm definitely in one of those "Snape survived" camps. :) I attribute it to the rule of X-Files: no body, no death. And while they mentioned his body in one sentence, no one bothered to check a pulse, etc.

I'd like to think Severus survived by some might of willpower/Fawkes/Lily's intervention, and either was rescued later that day when Harry insisted they go get his body for a proper burial or decided to say 'screw this' and left on his own to never return again.

*shrug* At least there's enough of a loophole we could believe this! Think of the poor Dumbledore fan girls! (Do those exsist, btw? :P )

Hmm, there are Snapefen and, I guess, there are some Dumble(a)doreans? I am in the Draught of Living Death or Bezoar Camp. Snape had big billowing sleeves, and I think he had something up those sleeves.

I would think that knowing his life was constantly in danger he'd have a Bezoar on him while he was doing his double agent thing. Severus was too smart to just leave it to chance.

Billowing robes, yes, but I think it refers to the body of the robe, not the sleeves. Imagine dragging such things through your cauldron, or a student's! Really he ought not to be wearing long sleeves at all, especially not covering the base of the hand like they have in the film (sexy as that is on the right shape of hand). Pretty impractical. I almost always change into short sleeves when I'm cooking or baking, never mind something more potentially dangerous like potion-brewing.

I stand corrected! Billowing sleeves would be disastrous in that Potions Lab. (Cough) Neville (Cough). There could be a Flaming Snape Episode with billowing sleeves. Not good.

You make me want to properly (re)write my old fanfic I started about 5 years ago and never saw the light of day....

dammit.
