Following on what I just reposted from twissie, I would like to point out that LiveJournal has (or very nearly has) shut down its US office.

Wow. I mean that doesn't necessarily mean it's curtains for LJ but that is worrisome.

It's been heading that way for some time ever since the purchase by SUP, I think - though they say things like "US users shouldn't notice any problems", it seems clear to me it's the use case, desires, and needs of their Russian users that they actually care about (if in fact they care about them either, and don't just arbitrarily lay stuff on them they don't ask for like they have been doing here in the US :P ).

I think people tend to take it personally, but for me it is all business. DW is just better for me in terms of useability - 50K word posting limits, 5k word comment limits, comment editing, amazing customer service. If I could get everyone to move there I would happily dump the other journals.

I just never liked the look of DW, the layout is very clunky and unpleasant. I have one but never post to it.

I've heard a lot of folks say the same thing so it's obviously an issue. I just never bothered to personalize my own layouts anywhere. I'm all about functionality. And plain stuff with no pictures loads quickly every time and black text on white is easy to read. I actually have a seed account there for my personal journal and about 20 others for modding.

...TBH, I find this opinion a bit odd, since I find DW a lot less "clunky and unpleasant" than LJ. If you will indulge my curiosity - and feel free to say "Hey, I like what I like, shaddup" -- what exactly do you mean by "the layout"? The bulk of the site code is inherited from LJ. They have been working on a new posting page, yes. Is that what's bothering you?

Actually, I rather dislike LJ too and after the strikeout fiasco didn't have a LJ for a long time, I much prefer IJ which reminds me of the old, simple LJ. I only keep a LJ since it seems to be preferred over IJ and a lot of communities are only available here. But if I had my druthers I'd use IJ exclusively.

Lots of services I use online are located in other countries. It is something to be aware of, though.
