Author's notes: As soon as I got matched on this, I reread the book for the first time since I was a teenager, and I'm very glad I did. There is so much going on here, the sheer amount of depth and symbolism packed into the prose, the way it all dances around the themes of beauty and love and mortality without quite giving them away (unless it's Schmendrick talking, then he will occasionally simply Tell You The Themes in that fascinating leaning-on-the-Fourth-Wall way he has)... It was an incredibly inspiring read and I had... way more ideas than I really knew what to do with. But I'm pretty damn happy with what I managed to chisel out of it.

It’s not the medication Campbell is on in this fic, and not the same specific side effects, but this one is dedicated to Asenapine. Fuck you, Asenapine. Fic title is from “California” by Yungblud. His music is so Campbell coded.
