Full disclosure: I am not personally thrilled with the visual result of [livejournal.com profile] foxestacado's finally-completed painting of Severus Snape (I have grown too fundamentalist, I think, about certain aspects of his appearance, and I find it difficult to see him in that portrait), but I love that she says this about her experience with it:

I am actually not 100% satisfied with this painting, but I feel this is as close as I can get to my personal idea of Severus Snape from the books. Perhaps because I feel so close to Severus Snape in the books, that his essence, his personality, is more than what a two-dimensional picture can entail. He is a soul to me, one of the most tragic figures in literature, and became a myth, which goes beyond its physical manifestation, and perhaps for that reason, I am never truly happy with my paintings of him, a mere attempt at a physical representation.

*Nods* It doesn't look like -my- idea of Snape, but I, too, find him difficult to capture. I have been close... but thus far I can never be completely satisfied with any drawing I do of him. I agree that there is more to his appearance than mere physiognomy can possibly convey.

No to be too critical, as it's a lovely piece, but I think it's a bit too much Robert Downey, Jr., and too little Adrien Brody. But that's just MY view of Snape.
