Did anyone else hear McGonagall say "Piertotem locomotor" (that means roughly "all stone move", right?) and think "Substitutiary Locomotion"?

P.S. Am I the only person in fandom not at all convinced that Alan Rickman's performance was Oscar-worthy? Don't get me wrong, it was pretty good, but aside from Visual Effects I've never found anything in the Potter films really worthy of any nomination. (Remember when ... HBP, I think it was... was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay? I LOLed.)

Heh. No, you're not. He's done an amazing turn as Our Sev, but come on, even he isn't entranced with the idea of an Oscar. When Daniel Radcliffe was gushing about OMG the performance of his (AR's) LIFE, AR just quietly smiled and said, "Dan, you're 21."

But you're daresome to actually say such.

I thought Helena BC's performance (both as Bellatrix and Hermione) was worth an award Nom. Alan was just delivering the script - perfectly competently, as you'd expect, but the films needed a more visionary director than Yates to get anywhere near Oscar/Bafta glory.

HBP was made during the Writer's strike - I doubt that there was any competition for screenplay nominations in that year.

To me Bellatrix was very much out of character, looked like a scared puppy at times... it`s just me...

I disagree with all this fuss about Oscars nominations. AR's performance is OOC and pretty average in itself. And he has a double chin. Not Severus at all, no. :shakes head:

No, you're not. I haven't seen the whole film yet but managed to find video of TPT online and well, he seems to give the same stiff reading of Snape he's always given. Parts of it were moving, between the swelling music and visuals but to me the whole scene fell flat.

And don't get me started on the way the films seemed to have ultimately changed Snape's character into a complete, unambiguous "good guy" with no redemption arc or past misdeeds to atone for. I was afraid they were going to do that but was so hopeful that they'd do the character justice.

Stupid me. They haven't done justice to the character all along, why would I expect them to do so at the very end?

I better stop here since it would be too easy to go on a tl;dr tirade about film!Snape that I doubt anyone on your f-list wants to read. :P

*Waits for Rickman!Snape fans to eviscerate her.*

Well, what does "Oscar-worthy" mean? The premise here involves two ideals: acting and judging. Considering the evidence about how Oscars are awarded, I'd say sure, why not Alan Rickman.

I saw nothing in Rickman's performance that screamed 'Oscar-worthy'. Even if they considered awarding his whole body of work on the HP series (kind of like how they dumped a crap load of awards on "Lord of the Rings" after the last movie). Nothing he did in the entire series was all that remarkable. He was competent in giving the director what he wanted, but that was all, in my humble opinion. Come to think of it, thought Rickman is a competent and very professional actor, I still don't think I've ever seen him in any role where I was just blown away.

But, you know, in the case of HP films, I mostly blame the director, because Gary Oldman, for instance, is just amazing. I mean, seriously, I've seen him in so many things where I felt he deserved an Oscar, and yet even he came across as fairly mediocre in the HP films. I mean, don't get me wrong. I think he did a competent job as Sirius, but there was nothing too remarkable in his performance. And in that case I know that Oldman is capable of much more, so I can only chalk it up to the vision of director and producers.

I'm hoping to see the film this weekend, but I never thought Rickman's performance in the movies was ever Oscar worthy. Then again, I never liked Rickman as Snape, so I may be biased.

Raises hand... I would love the movie to get an Oscar... but honestly, Rickman was OK, but Dan made me cry.... it`s just me...I am kind of stupid you know..
