arcanetrivia: a light purple swirl on a darker purple background (general (hbp book))
There is absolutely nothing here to catalog right now, so I need something to read. I am almost to the point of actually digging something out of the favourites I've spent over four years collecting (although more valuable in that vein, I suppose, is the offline saving of everything favorited, because a good deal of it isn't online anymore - but that's at home and I'm at work), or browsing back in old Snarry Games or Snapely Holidays fests. Any suggestions? As usual I want to read soemthing with Severus in it, and honestly I could go for something gen right now; the usual suspects on pairings are fine too (Lily, Sirius, Regulus, Harry, Draco), but I'm not in the mood to try to wrap my head around a rarepair (Ron, Kingsley...). Looking for something medium to longish, by which I mean about 30-60k. No heavy kink content (BDSM scenes and the like, as well as bestiality, necro, the common squicks of that sort) and no non-con or graphic torture. Dub-con and mild chan OK (younger participant 15 or older). Old stuff now canon-shafted is fine. Any rating but plot preferred to smex-heavy at the moment.

To give you an idea, I just got done re-reading [livejournal.com profile] perverse_idyll's When the Rose and the Fire Are One (though a tad on the long side), which she just reposted on FFN, and was thinking of going at The White Road again, which I loved in the Snarry Holidays in which it was posted (and as I recall was a breakout/runaway hit).

I am going to rec something so old that you've probably already read it, but I'll rec it just in case. :)

Oh, on a side note, I was wondering if you'd heard about these two fests?

They seem like something which might work well with your liking for reading Severus. :)

On the contrary, "so old" makes them harder to find. I certainly wasn't in fandom in 2002.

Very true! A lot of the older stuff does vanish, as it tended to be hosted on free servers, which went the way of the dodo these past five years or so.

Glad you liked it!

Here are a few of my favorites - hope you'll like them!

1) The Prefect's Portrait by Arsinoe de Blassenville is a lovely SS/HG with a little Lily thrown in, done up as a beautiful Art Nouveau e-book by Ren Hen Publications, here: http://www.redhen-publications.com/files_to_post/Publications/Portrait.pdf

2)The Shrivenshraft's Book by Unknown Author is my latest favorite SS/HG from the current [community profile] sshg_exchange. A truly lovely story, plotty mystery, sweet ending! http://sshg-exchange.livejournal.com/252197.html

3)The Janus Rose by RichardGloucester is perhaps my favorite Severus gen fic of all time. It's so very beautiful, but it will make you weep through the whole thing, so keep the tissues handy! http://severus-shorts.livejournal.com/10411.html

4)My Name is Cameron Sage by thesewarmstars . Teh Snarry isn't usually my cuppa; suspending disbelief is very hard for me when it comes to these two. But this one gets it right: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4442117/1/My_Name_is_Cameron_Sage

5)A Troublesome Transition By McKay and Arionrhod is a SS/RL that is one of the co-authors' best works, from my point of view. It's more about the characters themselves than anything between them, though that does come into play by the end. It's a *very* intriguing plot about the afterlife and their place in it: http://remembrall.slashcity.net/viewstory.php?sid=512

6)My Journal About My Life and Stephen and Miranda by KellyChambliss is a *fabulous* story about SS/MMcG after the war, seen through the eyes of the 12 year old girl they move next door to. There's even a sequel at the same fest the following year. Both are brilliantly witten, brilliantly fun and deeply touching. http://severusb4.livejournal.com/26091.html and http://severusbigbang.livejournal.com/48271.html#cutid1

6) One last one that I couldn't resist, even though you said no rare pairs; you won't be sorry if you read The Conjugal State by atdelphi. I laughed my way through the whole thing, it is such brilliantly and sympathetically written comedy. SS/AF should simply *not* work, and yet, here it does. And you'll be left with a grin that will take some time to go away. http://asylums.insanejournal.com/hp_beholder/44687.html

There - that ought to keep you busy for awhile! ::g:: Anything else SS you've got a taste for, let me know - I've got a zillion of 'em. :-D

Hello -- I doubt I know of many stories that you won't have already encountered, and I read more oneshots than long works, but I'll just throw out these suggestions anyway :)

Water Horse (http://www.sugarquill.net/read.php?storyid=1951&chapno=1) by Igenlode Wordsmith. Medium-length fic, gen. Professors Snape and McGonagall attempt to create an Unforgivable antidote, but wind up unleashing a monster. This is an under-rated classic, in my opinion, with very good characterization, pacing, horror, and action. Written mid-series and long since canon-shafted, but presenting a compelling version of Snape nonetheless.

The Conspiracy of Silence series (part one of seven novellas) (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/450011/1/Conspiracy_of_Silence_First_Impressions) by Nomad1. Maybe everyone has already read these, I'm not sure. But they are simply delightful. Again gen, with strong Snape-Lily friendship. The author maintains a website that gives multi-fandom gen fic recs, and her Snape collection includes some interesting stories. She has good taste. You can find those recs HERE (http://nomads-gen-recs.livejournal.com/tag/hp%3Asnape).

Also, whitehound has a very large and well-organized Snape rec list HERE (http://members.madasafish.com/~cj_whitehound/Fanfic/links/HP.htm) with different types of stories and pairings clearly labeled so it's easy to find what you like and skip what you don't.

I have a number of Snape stories marked on my ff dot net profile page (most of them are Snape/Lily in some form). They are largely oneshots, but you might find something you haven't already seen. Just click the "favorites" tab over HERE (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1622517/Rachel_Indeed).

Best wishes!

Nice! Conspiracy of Silence is *very* canon-shafted, so it may not be your cup of tea. But it might be fun if you're ever in the right mood :)

He was listening to the two of them bicker with a slightly lost look on his face. "You two... know each other?" he asked carefully.

"Oh yeah. We're old friends," said Lily breezily.

"Let's not exaggerate," said Snape.

"We solve mysteries together," Lily elaborated, sticking her tongue out at him.

"I solve. She follows me around and makes smart remarks."

"At least they're smart," she shrugged.

I've been wandering LJ all day so I can no longer recall how I stumbled across yours, but I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this link to "The White Road" -- it's beautiful, stunning, poetic, just absolutely gorgeous, and if not for you I never would have found it :)
