Color printer recommendations?
Dec. 5th, 2018 08:14 pmDoes anyone have any recommendations for color inkjet printers these days? I'm trying to browse at Newegg (just as a starting place) and finding the selection extremely daunting.
1. I expect the successful candidate is likely to be an HP, Epson, or Canon.
1b. However, it cannot be an HP ENVY unless they have figured out how not to make it effing LOUD AS HELL. My mother's wakes me up from sleep through both of our closed bedroom doors even in supposedly "quiet" mode.
2. Connection by both wi-fi and USB is preferred, but if not, then USB only is acceptable. (Cabled ethernet won't work where it's going to go.)
3. I do not want an all-in-one unless that's absolutely unavoidable. I'm tired of chucking perfectly good scanners because something's gone amiss with the printer.
4. It doesn't have to be hot shit at photo printing, because its more common use would be for printing things like flyers and buttons for PantheaCon. Nor does it need to print extremely fast because it's not going to be used for (sort of) high volumes very often.
5. Price is not exactly no object, but don't take it into account in your rec, so long as it falls in ordinary consumer range and not professional.

Dec. 1st, 2017 10:17 amIs using the verb "deduct" to mean "to reason from evidence to a logical conclusion" a British usage thing? There's a scene in the NuWho S2 episode "Fear Her" where it's used in the present progressive, "Are you deducting?" and I've just seen someone use it in the same way in a Potter fanfic. To me those sound odd and the verb for this meaning should be "deduce", while "deduct" means "subtract" (although the noun can be either - a tax deduction, a sensible deduction). They come from the same Latin root, but -- mrr?
Managing fanfic bookmarks
Mar. 18th, 2015 11:47 amSince getting into Doctor Who fandom some, I've once again built up a large folder of bookmarks of fics to read. (Ah, the stupid glory days of Potter fandom when I actually vaguely tried to keep up on things like Snarry Games and Harry/Draco World Cup...) This is fine for my desktops and laptop, where Firefox Sync takes care of me, but I can't easily get at them from the iPad if, say, I should want to read something in bed. I've been kludging along by pasting links into a Google doc now and then, but I'd like a more elegant solution that I don't have to manually keep in sync, for either adding or deleting. I considered getting a Delicious account and bookmarking fics there instead of in my browser, but the Delicious app requires iOS 7.1. I could just try working on the website, I suppose, but it is a first-gen iPad of very little brain and tends to choke on anything slightly dynamic, so a dedicated app is more likely to work. (I can edit the Google doc, but just barely.) Any thoughts?
If anyone else out there uses LJLogin, have you noticed that it hasn't been able to log in to LJ (specifically; IJ and DW work fine) for about 5+ days now? If I log in manually it detects the login and updates the status bar appropriately, but selecting a login from its own menu does nothing, it just stays at "Not logged in." I think it might be connected to the latest LJ update and/or the "Connection reset" errors people have been seeing, but I haven't gotten any response from
slarti about it.

Mar. 20th, 2012 12:53 pmDoes anyone reading this happen to know much about If This, Then That (ifttt.com)? I have a question about how to get it to put things into my Google Reader when the task trigger activates.

Jan. 17th, 2012 11:40 amDoes anyone have an idea how we might manage to get rid of a piano we no longer want without having to pay for its removal and disposal? We have an antique (ca. turn of the 20th century) upright piano and haven't been having luck selling the thing on Craigslist or with signs posted by the music department, possibly because it's not in the greatest condition. We had never put a high price tag on it, but honestly at this point we'd be willing to give it away for free if only someone would come and take it away. (I suppose I haven't tried Freecycle, but argh, to me that's a pain to deal with and basically last resort.) I wonder if I just haven't found the right audience for this kind of thing (it might be a nice project if one were into restoring old pianos, for instance). Any tips?

Oct. 11th, 2011 01:40 pmThere is absolutely nothing here to catalog right now, so I need something to read. I am almost to the point of actually digging something out of the favourites I've spent over four years collecting (although more valuable in that vein, I suppose, is the offline saving of everything favorited, because a good deal of it isn't online anymore - but that's at home and I'm at work), or browsing back in old Snarry Games or Snapely Holidays fests. Any suggestions? As usual I want to read soemthing with Severus in it, and honestly I could go for something gen right now; the usual suspects on pairings are fine too (Lily, Sirius, Regulus, Harry, Draco), but I'm not in the mood to try to wrap my head around a rarepair (Ron, Kingsley...). Looking for something medium to longish, by which I mean about 30-60k. No heavy kink content (BDSM scenes and the like, as well as bestiality, necro, the common squicks of that sort) and no non-con or graphic torture. Dub-con and mild chan OK (younger participant 15 or older). Old stuff now canon-shafted is fine. Any rating but plot preferred to smex-heavy at the moment.
To give you an idea, I just got done re-reading
perverse_idyll's When the Rose and the Fire Are One (though a tad on the long side), which she just reposted on FFN, and was thinking of going at The White Road again, which I loved in the Snarry Holidays in which it was posted (and as I recall was a breakout/runaway hit).

Pottermore
Aug. 4th, 2011 10:30 amOk, so, clue 5 is open right now. And unless the Order moved from number 12, Grimmauld Place to some other house number, I'm sure I have the right numerical answer. But when I plug it in to the URL like you're supposed to I just get redirected to the Scholastic website. Am I missing something? Or is this maybe like the second question on the "Insider" page:
I solved the clue for Day 4 but I couldn't find The Magical Quill. What happened?
Due to huge demand today, not everyone who solved the Day 4 clue was able to find The Magical Quill. To ensure no one missed out on the chance to register for early access to Pottermore, we decided to direct people who successfully solved the clue straight to the Pottermore registration page, where they were able to register as normal.
Do I just need coffee?
eta: Too late now, it's closed again. I would be interested to hear from those who have successfully registered, though, what they saw or did next when they entered the solution address.

Aug. 3rd, 2011 07:33 pmIs there any way to contact someone on tumblr besides their "ask" box? What I really want to do is leave a comment directly on a post (because it happens to be a photo that belongs to me, and I just wanted to provide original links, not to mention explain the subject of the photo because it is rather bizarre!), but for the life of me I can't find a way to do that either (is it that they have to have turned on Disqus?), and "Ask" won't let you include html links, which I need to do in this case. Um.

Apr. 26th, 2011 10:51 pmI'll be leaving for Aeternitas in less than 8 hours (!). Since we have two net-enabled portable devices, this means I'll be able to bring the laptop, thus, hopefully will be able to get on the net in airports and while at the con. Buuuut this means there's precious little room for actual books in my carry-on bag, which is my usual method of entertainment on flights (since I am not the type who can sleep on airplanes). I've got a couple of things on my USB stick but I would like some longish fic suggestions. (I've got over 8 hours of travel tomorrow and nearly 10.5 (!) on the return trip.)
Preferred parameters:
Severus/Regulus, /Sirius, /Lily, /Harry, /Draco (threesomes/combinations also OK), but I'll also give a stab at a number of other ships, notably Severus/Remus, Severus/James (...is there such a thing as long, not non-con of this ship?) and Severus/OC (het or slash), or rarer things. Boredom might even induce me to try a Severus/Hermione. ;) Also I might read a Sirius/Regulus.
or Gen. Ya rly, I like a good genfic.
All ratings OK. Violence of R level OK - I don't really want graphic torture and that kind of thing. Please no non-con, bestiality, necro, the usual squicks along those lines. (Dub-con OK.) I have some BDSM and specific kink aversions but don't worry about suggesting something that might hit them; it's not a trigger issue and I know how to not read something that bugs me or skim through bits if they're just incidental.
Bah, that all sounds so picky. Just, whatever! And if I don't read it I don't read it, and if I do I do, whooptee-lee-laaah.
I should really get to bed if I'm thinking I'm going to get up at 4:30 or something.

woob woob woob!
Dec. 31st, 2010 11:08 pmHusband is playing Batman: Arkham Asylum and we noted the Joker using the line from the Three Stooges short feature, Men in Black (no relation plotwise!), "Paging Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard..." As you might expect in the Wikipedia article, there's a short section with other pop culture references.
I mused aloud that it probably said something about the US that the Three Stooges were such a big part of our pop culture inheritance, rather than being forgotten in the slag heap of Hollywood, and struggled to think what, if any, would be comparable points in the cultures of Canada and Britian. I mean, the Kids in the Hall and Monty Python immediately come to mind in the skit/slapstick/silly comedy arenas, but those are both much more recent. (And more clever, to my mind, although maybe it's a different kind of cleverness; as I remarked to
cosmiccoz the other day that I couldn't imagine Dr Who lines appearing in any American TV shows, that our screenwriting seemed fundamentally different in character, I suppose the converse? inverse? is true as well.)
So I wonder, and ask the hive mind: what, if the question is sensible (and it may not be; it may be too Americentric, and the focal points are elsewhen elsewhere), are really the blocks which have the same place in respective pop culture piles as the Three Stooges do in that of the US?

Dec. 21st, 2010 11:20 amCan someone explain to me what the big deal is about del.icio.us and why it's so horrible that Yahoo is "sunsetting" it? I used it briefly as part of a project I was doing for work a couple of years ago, so it's not that I don't know what it does, I just don't get what's so wonderful about it. (It would seem that, like Facebook, I am not in need of the service it provides.)
I read some comments on a blog post about it which were like "noooo where will I keep all my fic bookmarks??" and I was like um, in "faves" lists in your account on whatever fic site? Or in bookmarks in your browser if it doesn't have that function or you can't get an account? (aside peeve: I wish there were a way for me to get a skyehawke account so I could fave things. I understand invite-only as quality control, but...) And "nooo how will I find fic?" really didn't make sense to me - I found del.icio.us very awkward as a discovery tool and exploring communities on LJ has probably been the best-results method for me on that (maybe other fandoms operate very differently to Harry Potter, I dunno).

i feel the need...
Oct. 26th, 2010 09:39 pmHaving caught up to
fire_everything's
marauderbigbang fic as far as it's been written, I am now in possession of a literally 100% empty "to read" folder: so literal, in fact, that I deleted all the by-length subdivisions it's had for over three years (<5k, 5-10k, 10-30k, etc. - a tool for picking a story of length appropriate to how much time I had available to read).
Sooo.... now what? Ask the hive mind, I guess.
Please to drop me a rec? Given the circumstances, I'm willing to branch out beyond my usual (Severus/Sirius, Severus/Regulus, Severus/Lily, some Severus/Harry, and gen), although those are fine, of course. Notably vs. my usual expressed preferences, feel free to rec me a Severus/Remus or (*gasp*) a Severus/Hermione, among other pairings, maybe even (*gasp mk. II*) ones not involving Severus, but not femslash. Threesomes okay; no preferences on who tops in slash pairings.
edit: To be clear, I am asking for specific story links, or small groups (e.g. "read this series of 4 by so-and-so"). "X is a good writer in Y ship" isn't helpful if it's a ship I don't normally read - I have no prior experience to help me sort through a list of fics and determine which ones I actually want to look at. </edit>
I'd prefer <30k words. Any rating or genre is fine, no problem with angst, violence, character death, or mild chan (younger participant 15 or older), but I'm not into BSDM content (it kind of makes me glaze over - really soft stuff like people tying each other up with scarves and ties is fine, but specialized toys and really D/s-themed fic leaves me cold) and I'm not up for intense fluff at the moment. It's okay if it's older and has plot/setting details jossed by later books.

How did Sirius get his stuff back?
Sep. 14th, 2010 12:11 pmSome idle speculation on this semi-plot-hole, which I've seen wondered about at various times:
How did Lily's letter to Sirius, which would have been sent to him while he was living elsewhere than Grimmauld Place (presumably in that flat of his own that he got thanks to Uncle Alphard's money), wind up back in his bedroom for Severus to find, especially given that Sirius went to Azkaban for 12 years?
I was just brainstorming about this while lying in bed last night and wondered if any of the following solutions were plausible as ways for Sirius's stuff to get out of wherever he was living at the time.
1. At the time of PoA we're told that general rumour was Sirius was a Death Eater or other supporter of Voldemort and that was why "he" killed Peter and those Muggles. We know from Karkaroff that not all the DE's knew each other. Could one of the actual DE's somehow gained access to his dwelling and spirited his stuff back to Grimmauld Place (under the misapprehension that Mrs Black, who'd be the only one living there at that point since - canon tells us Regulus is dead; the extra-canonical tapestry drawing tells us Mr Black was too) would give a damn?
2. Scenario similar to the above might also work if it was someone else he knew who was not in the Order and didn't know about it (the Order would probably want to go through his things to make sure there was nothing exposing them, and I don't know if they'd have let this letter and picture go, although maybe the damage was done at that point), and preferred to see his goods returned rather than seized by the Ministry?
3. Could there have been some kind of protective enchantments on his dwelling, similar to those around 12 Grimmauld Place itself, which resulted in everything simply sitting there unfound for 12+ years, and Sirius himself (or someone on his behalf, like Remus) was able to go fetch it sometime after PoA?

Ideas taken here on exactly what is going on in this bit in the DH teaser trailer:

Immediate guess would have been just before "Snape-shaped hole" but it's not night (unless there's something odd going on out the window) and, well, that's just not how I pictured the motion. Other options...?

Text for Snape buttons
May. 27th, 2010 09:42 pmI'm currently going through my personal collection of Severus Snape art to pick out the first pool of candidates I may use for buttons. I would like to put some text on the buttons, like I wrote Severus/Lily @ Azkatraz 2009 on those ones. But somehow just writing Severus Snape @ Infinitus 2010 or something like that seems boring, and also possibly confusing with the Snapecast shindig (although I think they're usually careful to use that specific name on things). I do want to have @ Infinitus 2010, but the first part could use some jazzing up. Even tiny text of, like, (Snape. Snape.) arced across the top and then the Severus Snape @... part on the bottom would help (because no one, including myself, is tired of "The Mysterious Ticking Noise" references, I'm sure).
So yeah. Any ideas, anyone?
