arcanetrivia: animated gif of Guybrush, dizzy with stars over his head after jumping through the window of the Bloody Lip bar (monkey island (guybrush dizzy))

Big splat of 15 Monkey Island fic recs

I've been sitting on these for a while, oop. Putting the extended info like author's notes, my comments, and quotes from the fics behind cuts, as this is gonna be kinda long anyway.

Fire & Ice by [fanfiction.net profile] jen-kollic
Characters: Morgan LeFlay, Jugbender, Dante Dragotta
Rating: Teen
Words: 18,083 (abandoned WIP)
Author's summary: So, what exactly is Morgan LeFlay's backstory, and how did she become a Mighty Pirate Hunter? We get a lot of vague details in 'Lair of the Leviathan', but how to put them all together is anyone's guess...
Author's notes: After playing through Tales of Monkey Island again, I found myself wondering exactly what Morgan's background is. The details we get, mostly in Lair of the Leviathan, are all very vague. So I started speculating about how these details might slot together, got innundated with plotbunnies and the result is this fanfic. Though I would still really like to see an official Telltale backstory for Morgan, either in the form of a spinoff game, written prose, or a comic by Steve Purcell. (plz Telltale?)
Author's warnings: None

My comments: (Chapter 1) "Good rendering of "The Time I Blew Up LeChuck". I'd read it. (But then, I'm as much of a Guybrush fangirl as Morgan is.)"
(Chapter 2) "I like the "lava globe", that's cute!"
(Chapter 3) "See, I know Guybrush's published version of events is about 90 percent BS, but it's just so entertaining, especially if I imagine it in his voice. He's got a bit of a gift ;)"
(Chapter 4) "On the roof of the church? Sure, Guybrush, sure you did. Morgan filling in Guybrush's name in the novels, um... has she not noticed the anagram? That's probably more correct than she realizes..."
(Chapter 5) "Nice historical cameo from Carla and Smirk there :)"
(Chapter 6) "Well, too bad there isn't any more of this, but I also save abandoned WIPs if there's enough tomthem, so I'll be keeping this one. It would have been neat to see Morgan and Gus, and how she actually came to be a pirate hunter!"
Quote:
"Well, that might be a slight exaggeration," Dragotta replied modestly. "But they certainly didn't like crossing swords with me. Can't imagine why."
"Maybe because your idea of a good response to one of their insults was to stick a blade in them?" Jugbender offered. "Though you did say that was because your English wasn't so good back then and you didn't always understand what they were saying."
"Well, they should have taken some time to enunciate more clearly." Dragotta shrugged, reaching back to pick up his tankard. "They all sound the same after a while anyway."

A Tale of Two Dread Pirate Zombie Captains by [fanfiction.net profile] Emerald-Embers
Fandom: Monkey Island/Pirates of the Caribbean
Pairing/Characters: Guybrush, Jack; references to Guybrush/Elaine and Jack/Anamaria
Rating: K+
Words: 2720
Author's summary: Monkey Island/Pirates of the Caribbean crossover; the importance of pirate training.

Quote:
The only problem with being a pirate is it requires you to stay in regular contact with other pirates, and on the whole they're not a terribly polite lot, especially to suspected salespeople. Still, it could have been worse. They could have taken his clothes and passport.
Guybrush supposed his line of thought would have been more comforting if he wasn't hanging upside down from a tree at the time.

The Road to Monkey island by [fanfiction.net profile] Threepwillow
Fandom: Monkey Island/The Road to El Dorado
Pairing/Characters: Guybrush/Elaine, LeChuck, Miguel/Tulio
Rating: Teen
Words: 15,351
Author's summary: What do an irritated governor, two fast-talking Spaniards, and a voodoo MacGuffin have in common? Guybrush Threepwood is stuck on a ship with all three of them, on another adventure to the dubious Monkey Island.
Author's notes: I don't know why this is happening but it is. It's not really an El Dorado crossover so much as a Monkey Island fic that happens to have Miguel and Tulio in it. And it's not really a fic so much as an excuse to have Miguel and Tulio Insult Swordfighting.

My comment: "I was a little unsure at first about how you were characterizing Elaine, but then, at the time you wrote this Escape would have been the only depiction available of their married life, and uh, that game left a little bit to be desired and some of the jokes they made haven't aged too well... so given that I think you did a decent job and did soften up a bit (she bosses him some, but doesn't treat him like an idiot, a child, or, especially, hit him!).
The dreams of the future thing was a neat device. I'm kinda with Guybrush and idk if the Insult not working on Elaine because she's a woman would really hold water, but what the heck. (Joke sure would have been on LeChuck the first time he tried that, then!) But assuming that it does, the thing about the Comeback operating on the "esprit d'escalier" principle and requiring knowledge of the future to really use it was a neat twist.
I haven't seen The Road to El Dorado outside of memes/reaction images, but Miguel and Tulio seem fun here, sort of a pair after Guybrush's own outlook. I was amused whe Guybrush wasn't too bothered by the idea of them stealing gold because hey he can sympathize.
I doubt that at this distance in time you will see this comment, but well done anyway and this one is going into the favorites!"

Quote:
"Oh," said the dark-haired guy, and his face fell a little. "Well, in that case, I guess we ought to go back to scamming ourselves, shouldn't we, Miguel."
"And leave this poor sap to get screwed, Tulio," Miguel agreed. "Toodle-oo!"
But though Guybrush wasn't actually a con artist, he had figured out two things about these two: They were damn resourceful. And they liked money. "Fine, whatever," he said, calling back over his shoulder as he walked away more slowly than necessary. "I was gonna ask you two to join my pirate crew, but if you're more interested in your con than searching for buried treasure, then - "
"Now slow down a moment," said Tulio, instantly in front of him.

Largo LaGrande Meets LeCrew by [archiveofourown.org profile] MinMinGood
Characters: Largo LaGrande, LeChuck, Iron Rose, Flair Gorey, Apple Bob, Gullet, Putra, Flambe
Rating: Teen
Words: 4224
Author's summary: Somehow, Largo LaGrande has ended up on LeShip, and LeChuck is willing to give him another shot at being on the crew. But he needs to find a job to do, and he needs to not irritate everyone around him.
Author's warnings: Chose Not To Use (but none)
Additional tags: Light-Hearted, One-shot, Wonky canon, Some gross zombie body stuff, Hopefully at least somewhat funny, Largo being an absolute pest, crew fights

My comment: "What a fun concept. Everyone here is just so friendly and charming with one another, aren't they đŸ€Ł Maybe Rose should think about instituting a weekly boxing ring so these people can work out their aggressions a little bit... I like the little touch about Largo at first disdaining and then thinking 'hm, actually...' about having theme music."

Quote:
“Why wouldn’t you just kill him?”
LeChuck leaned over his desk, raising an eyebrow dramatically. “Insinuatin’ somethin’?”
“No, Sir.” She suppressed a sigh. “It’s just all Kelly did was ask if you were done with the salt, and you cut their throat. That was only two days ago.”
“It was their tone!” He slammed his fist on the desk.

In the Cards by [archiveofourown.org profile] thedevilchicken
Characters: Guybrush, Voodoo Lady
Rating: Teen
Words: 2149
Author's summary: A Yuletide gift for tahanrien! A little slice of backstory for Guybrush, and the Voodoo Lady. She's always there, just like she's always been.
Author's notes: Haitian Creole translations (all apologies for any mistakes!): Poze san ou, monchĂš - calm down, my dear; Ou senesĂČf - you're safe (and sound). And, if you're at all interested in Maman Brigitte, I'd have a look here and here!
Author's warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply

My comment: "I know that when I got into Monkey Island about three and a half years ago, I at least looked at if not read all the way through everything there was to read on AO3, and I have a vague recollection of the title and premise of this fic, but I'm really surprised to find my name isn't in the comments or the kudos. Maybe at the time I hadn't been soaking in it long enough to appreciate what's going on here, or something, but I sure heckin' do appreciate it now. Guybrush's lack of a defined past and exactly how the VL has been meddling in his and LeChuck's lives all this time is always an interesting place to explore."

Quote:
He'd lie awake in bed at night and he'd imagine it all so vividly, the warm sand and the hot sun and the clear blue sea, the glint of gold against his palm where X marked the spot. He thinks that's where his dream came from: from the taverns in the town where he grew up.
He's half right, at least. Some of what he thinks is true. The rest is what she told him.

The Search by [archiveofourown.org profile] the_angst_alchemist
Pairing/Characters: Elaine/Guybrush, Original Characters
Rating: General
Words: 1631
Author's summary: Elaine has been at sea for a few weeks now, and her crew is starting to worry about her and how she keeps looking around the ship for something that isn't there. ...Or, rather, someone.
Author's notes: I would like to note, I didn't think about this part of time until after reading Timeless-A-Peel's fic Clarity, which is a fantastic piece. So please, offer them some love too. It's from 2016, but still, I enjoyed reading it as I slipped deeper into the fandom and scoured the tags for anything I could check out. [followed by lengthy notes on the OCs]
Author's warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Additional tags: Set between MI2 and Curse, While Guybrush is missing, Presumed Dead, Because I love the idea of Elaine looking for him, and realizing she loved him while he's gone, because of the Drama of it, Kind of reads like a therapy session whoops, Introspection, Light Angst, If I haven't made this abundently clear: It's about their relationship, but Guybrush is not there and there's no romance, except a little dream at the start

My comment: "Hey, Elaine, how do you know there's no exit from the tunnels, eh? You been down there? Frankly I'm not sure she'd know that the tunnels even existed, since while she seems to know of the location, even if she'd been present when the thing was buried, probably it didn't go so deep as to reach the outside of the tunnel below.
I see you too have lit onto that random shared headcanon of some of ours about Guybrush and looking at the stars, particularly at sea 😄 I've seen this happen in a couple fandoms, that occasionally the were some odd details that were never mentioned in canon but nevertheless people seemed to Just Know and dip up out of some kind of river of fictional truths."

Quote:
“I don’t either,” she admitted. Elaine finally let go of the railing, and she walked to the crates on the deck, sitting on one of them. “When I first realized he was dead, I
I thought it would be lovely to finally have closed the book on that part of my life. I thought I’d go back to Melee Island and finally get my mind right.” She ran a hand through her hair, then looked at Hugo. “...But I just kept thinking about him. Feeling like he’d walk through the door, or come up behind me and hug me, or something. And every time he didn’t, I just felt empty. Like a part of me never came back from Dinky Island.”

Symbiosis by [archiveofourown.org profile] MinMinGood
Characters: Flambé, Iron Rose, LeChuck, Largo LaGrande mentioned
Rating: General
Words: 701
Author's summary: Flambé appears to have actually done his job, for once. Surely this can't be right?
Author's warnings: Chose Not To Use, but none
Additional tags: I guess I'm just writing in a world where Largo is on LeCrew now, weird cooking, Wonky canon, Light-Hearted, One-shot

Quote:
The quartermaster snatched the paper from his hand, slapping the piece of paper in annoyance. The handwriting was
messy, incredibly messy. Filled with pretty poor spelling, too. She’d seen Flambé’s loopy, pretentious handwriting. She hadn’t seen this handwriting before, but she could take a pretty solid guess. She lowered the paper, looking straight into Flambé’s eyes. “Largo wrote this.”

Pinchpenny by [archiveofourown.org profile] MinMinGood
Characters: LeChuck, Largo LaGrande, Original Character
Rating: Teen
Words: 2224
Author's summary: LeChuck needs money, so he heads to Pinchpenny Island to meet with someone who might be able to help. He also has a back-up plan if they can't.
Author's warnings: Chose Not To Use; Violence, Character Death
Additional tags: Pre-Secret, Human LeChuck, Character Death, Vague mentions of brothels, Violence but no details, OC only exists for his fate

Quote:
Roger did believe LeChuck was successful, as successful pirates go. As the captain was talking, he’d been taking in his clothes, his boots, the several rings on his fingers, and the earrings—Roger only needed a glance to make a quick quality check. And LeChuck looked expensive. This could be a real payday. “How about you tell me what you’re looking for and what you need to pay for?” he asked, his light eyes gleaming.

I Am Afraid of Eternity Too by [archiveofourown.org profile] RandomArceus
Characters: Largo LaGrande
Rating: Mature
Words: 2384
Author's summary: You have died. And you find that, with there being nobody around to bury your body, you have to do it yourself.
Author's notes: Title from this song. Poor fic's been through three or so different titles in the ~month I've been sitting on it, but with this one I'm finally shoving her out of the nest.
Takes place post-monkey2 obviously, given that Largo is dead/a ghost in this one by not-fortress-exploding methods. But I suppose the amount of time after then it takes place is completely up to you: I imagine it a good handful of years in the future, once he's done things, been places... actually lived a little.
Also: like the tags said, written in second person. Because I'm a sucker for it. Largo = you. You know how it goes.
Author's warnings: Chose Not To Use; Past character death
Additional tags: POV Second Person, mentioned lechuck, Trauma, Unhealthy Relationships, Internal Conflict, Angst, like. shit-tons of angst. large heapings of raw angst. absolute angst-fest, Grief/Mourning, but like... for himself?, Ghosts, mentioned past main character death, descriptions of dead bodies

My comment: "So without getting too into the metaphysics (or indeed the physics) here... I do like the use of second person here. There's some things that can be quite effective for. I never like it in "reader x character"-type fics because I wind up thinking "but that's totally not how I would act." But in cases like this, it invites a temporary identification of the reader with the character, sort of a roleplay or acting, "imagine you're Largo for a moment" without having that kind of fakeyness when the "you" is an undefined reader.
The thought that even dead, Largo has to go back to "him", because what else can he, would he ever do, even though he'd been murdered... oof."

Quote:
It's a glaring hot sun's evening, the kind that burns metal to the touch. The kind that usually scalds and overheats. The kind that, as you ram the shovel you brought into an unoccupied patch of ground and begin to dig, makes you wonder: shouldn't you be hot right now? Sweaty? Not that you want to be sweaty, of course, but it almost feels like something is missing. You're not sure you're hot at all. But the sun's relentless glow leads you to take off your jacket. It's more of a habit than a necessity.

May-Hem #1: 28, Volcanic Eruption, Curse of Monkey Island by Laridian
Characters: Guybrush, Griswold Goodsoup, Madame Xima
Rating: Not rated; maybe Teen
Words: 742
Author's summary: Things go a lot worse here than they did in the game. For those who haven't played, Guybrush has just dropped some cheese into the caldera of Mount Acidophilus, home to a volcano god with very strict dietary rules.

My comment: ""Uhhhh.... whoopsie?" --Guybrush, probably
“I had nothing to do with this!” Nothing he wanted to admit, anyway.
Yeah, that matches his M.O. 😂"

Quote:
The volcano now belched fire and ash into the air, and Guybrush took shelter in a doorless palm-thatch hut, which seemed very flimsy against the cinders and rocks hurtling down from the sky.
“I’ll probably get blamed for this, too,” Guybrush muttered.

Multi-Faceted by [archiveofourown.org profile] the_angst_alchemist
Pairing/Characters: Elaine/Guybrush
Rating: Teen
Words: 8891
Author's summary: The legend of the Devil's Mirror has been told a thousand times, but when Elaine and Guybrush go to retrieve such a treasure, it's obvious that something much weirder has to happen-- it wouldn't be one of their adventures otherwise! When Guybrush accidentally looks into it, splitting himself into multiple fragments, it's up to Elaine to get her husband back together.
Author's notes: Pre-warning: This is slightly older, since I finished it at the end of March (and it's now late May), but I still wanted to post it even though I'm not as confident in how I wrote either character. Also, in advance: It's my blorbo, and I get to choose the trauma amount. >:3
Author's warnings: No Archive Warnings Appy
Additional tags: Is there a name for the trope where a person is broken down into different parts of their personality?, Because it's that., Out of Character, (kinda. i'm also just saying it because this was early writing for them on my end.), slightly inspired by a bit of Wander Over Yonder, and by that bit in Sam and Max Save the World ep 6, post-tales of monkey island

My comment: "edited to add: I've just noticed how long and rambling this is 😅 You surely didn't ask for a play by play of my journey here so tl;dr, fun idea. I used to like this trope back in my Harry Potter days (where you could also get this effect via magical accident). It's a fun way to get a character acting a bit different than usual and get X times the blorbo goodness on screen at once 😁"
(omitting the ramble referred to by that part.)

Quote:
It was obviously Guybrush, yes, but
different. He didn't have his usual blue coat, nor his start of a beard. Even his ears weren't pierced. Overall, he looked different, but
it was impossible to forget where she'd seen that face. The same face she'd seen on the docks that night a decade before, the same face that had broken into her mansion to steal the Idol of Many Hands, the same face that burst into the church to try to save her despite her already being safe.
It was Guybrush the day they'd met. The day they'd fallen in love for the first time.

Vagabond by [archiveofourown.org profile] CaptMickey
Characters: Guybrush, Original Characters
Rating: General
Words: 47,149
Author's summary: Before he became a husband and father, before he became a Mighty Pirate, before he washed ashore to Melee... he was just a lost child looking for a place to call home.
Author's notes: Basically a "What I Think Guybrush's Origin Is" fic.
Author's warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply; physical and verbal abuse
Additional tags: Child Abandonment, Origin Story, ....or at least a fan version of an origin story, Seasickness

My comment: (Chapter 1) "Aww, poor mite."
(Chapter 2) "Is it weird I'm kind of charmed by Guybrush's unkempt mop? Even though I know it's a sign he's not been cared for. Can't help but think that Guybrush would agree with Jack Sparrow that what a ship really is is freedom, mate. (and I bet that incident with the hand came back to him much later in life... oof.)"
(Chapter 3) Guybrush "Loophole" Threepwood 😜
I guess I am supposed to be seeing just an echo of the later Pirate Leaders here in Theodore and the two others, and it's not possibly actually them? (or maybe I'm jist seeing things, period, and that wasn't your intent at all.)
I feel like we have some similar ideas that Guybrush doesn't 100% know for certain that his parents are actually dead, they're just... not there, and he's on his own? ("I'm... kind of an orphan." "Kind of? What does that mean?" sort of thing.) And that he has papered this over as well as he can with his confidence in having made his own way to avoid dwelling on the question of whether it was out of their control or not.
I love Guybrush getting defiant and proud about his name.
As for the rest, well, I'm sending you my kleenex bill."
(Chapter 4) "I was thinking "we just keep running into each other, don't we, street rat" before you actually used the phrase, heh. He definitely does have a bit of an Aladdin quality here. Who doesn't love a plucky, scrappy, clever underdog 😌"
(Chapter 9) "Man, Garrett is a class A dickwad. Gullet's small petty potatoes in comparison. Hope he gets Guybrush throwing up on him sometime for his trouble 😜"
(Chapter 13) "I really hope that somewhere out in the world, Garrett is getting payback for treating Guybrush like such crap, but I know that's often not how it works in the world 😕"

Quote:
He wasn’t by any means an expert on all things ship-like, perhaps just a basic understanding from his occasional visit to the library, but even he knew that most ships had some kind of a calling. Whether it was a merchant, private, or public vessel, there was always a flag.
The only reason a ship wouldn’t have one was either it was blown away during the voyage

or it was a pirate ship.

Much Ado About Monkey Island by [tumblr.com profile] introsquirrel
Pairing/Characters: Guybrush/Elaine, Morgan LeFlay
Rating: G
Words: 1355
Author's warnings: Kind of a love triangle situation, but not really; this is unedited

Quote:
This is probably the most surprising turn of events. Morgan LeFlay is very much dead, according to Guybrush. She is also a “really great person!” according to Guybrush. She is also a competent swordfighter, which Elaine vaguely remembers from issuing her a pox-induced challenge to a fight to the death for Guybrush. And also she helped kill LeChuck once and for all, according to Guybrush. And Morgan LeFlay is known for mostly killing pirates, not kidnapping them and forcing them to marry her. It was distinctly out of character for her (according to Guybrush).
