arcanetrivia: Guybrush hanging off the side of a ship by a rope, enjoying the wind - cropped to just his face (monkey island (guybrush sailing))
Oh, uh, did I mention I made a community for [community profile] monkeyisland? I was a little surprised there wasn't a now-dead one hanging around from Ye Aulden Days of Dreamwidth of 2009-2010, since there was a fair amount of buzz in the fandom at that time about the release of Tales of Monkey Island and the special editions of Secret and Revenge. I actually had to submit a support ticket to be able to create it because the names monkeyisland, monkey_island, and all the variations with the underscore in silly spots (m_onkeyisland, etc.) were "reserved for administrative use" -- which turned out to mean "specifically blocked as account names because of some kind of prior problem with spambots"? I dunno who bothers to use the word "monkey" or "island" in such things, but whatever. (Maybe they meant those dang ugly-ape NFTs?) I don't know how long the block had been in effect although I would be surprised if it went as far back as ~2010.

Aaaanyhoo, I fear it will meet the same fate as [community profile] weareloonies, where there were never more members than I could count on one hand, I was the only person who ever posted, and I spent a lot of time updating recs lists for no one, but for now I'm rowing the boat myself, as it were.

eta: I've come across an interesting portion of my keyword search of journal entries that might be related (click to embiggen):
Screenshot of Dreamwidth site search results for the term monkey island, showing a block of deleted journals with randomized names suggesting they were spam accounts.

There's a block of like 25 of these in this period of what would have to be late 2017 to early 2018 even what they fall in between, sorted by date. (Note that despite the quotes in the search term, Dreamwidth isn't actually using a phrase search; entries that contain the two words, but separated from one another, still turn up in the search. That meant a completely unmanageable number of results on LiveJournal, so I had to use a proxy search term and try to branch out from its hits by other means, but on Dreamwidth there's few enough that it's plausible to go through them all.)

Title: The Night After
Fandom: Monkey Island
Characters: Guybrush, OCs
Rating: General
Words: 2685
Summary: Set immediately after the end of The Secret of Monkey Island. Guybrush learns that the story of his exploits just might be an interesting tale to tell.
Notes: From this prompt: Your character is in a cafe and overhears a conversation. How does it make them feel? Does it change the way they think about something? Write that scene. I think this kinda went out of bounds from that? And certainly it didn't take me a day to write this as a warmup in the way it's intended, lol. Try more like several weeks. But whatever.

Title: Dress-Up
Fandom: Monkey Island
Pairing/Characters: Guybrush/Elaine
Rating: Explicit
Words: 7812
Summary: What Guybrush was doing here was plain enough: he was after her piece of the map to Big Whoop. But as much as she would have liked to boot him out and go back to her pleasant day of keeping aloof from the insipid party downstairs, she couldn't in good conscience let it go at that without trying to find out exactly what he'd been up to.
Warnings/Contains/Additional Tags: Game: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (1991), Vaginal Sex, Crossdressing, crossdressing as per canon, that is Guybrush in the dress in the scene in which that actually occurs, abuse of semicolons
Notes: This was a personal challenge to me from someone who shall remain anonymous: When Guybrush is at the Mardi Gras party in the costume dress, could I manage to make that seem sexy? Whether I've succeeded is perhaps another question 😅 as that's not really the sort of thing I would usually focus on as a positive in itself.

I caught wind of [tumblr.com profile] smubbles-etc's Wanksgiving fest via a mutual on Tumblr last Wednesday night. Per the FAQ,
In November 2022 there was an idea circulating to yeet a bunch of short-form porn onto AO3 in a short time period, to offer up as a distraction for people facing fraught family interactions around the holiday season. We had so much fun creating random snippets of porn that we thought we’d make this a regular activity.
So they do more than Thanksgiving (you can find a bunch of other events if you look at their Tumblr), but this is the first time I've participated.

I wrote a set of 10 Monkey Island drabbles. I collected them in a series for organization purposes; there's no narrative connection between them. None were beta'd and they were all bashed out rather quickly in the spirit of the fest being pretty laid-back. I tried not to think about things too hard and instead just run with ideas as they occurred, so there's ships in there I don't actually ship and even femslash, which I have never written before.

In the spirit of the fest, they're all rated Mature or Explicit. Ships comprise Guybrush/Elaine, Guybrush/OFC, Iron Rose/Apple Bob, Iron Rose/Flair Gorey, Largo LaGrande/LeChuck, and something that isn't exactly Guybrush/LeChuck but they're both in there. They're mostly vanilla (one exception is maybe just a little on the unusal side, not major kink; and the other is more like darkfic than anything "kinky") and the Guybrush/Elaine ones tend to be rather sweet.

Fun fact: Between three authors, there were a total of 24 drabbles for Monkey Island, which was such a large percentage increase in the total number of Monkey Island fics that it took the #9 spot on fastest-growing fandoms that week.

“Melee Island…!” The archer gasped. He looked over his shoulder, there was a twinkle of stars in his eyes as the grin on his face grew more and more. “Oh zounds, do I get to shout the thing?”
Link’s ears drooped just slightly. “What thing?”
“Y’know, the pirate-y sailor thing!” Graham nearly hopped in his place. “Please let me shout it!”
“Considering I have no idea what that thing is, yeah sure.”
“Hee!” Graham jumped and dramatically pointed a finger at the island ahead, with all of its lights glittering against the starry sky and large full moon. A tall mountain with its own light at the top acted as a beacon for the two the closer they got. For an added bonus, and one that Link couldn’t help but wonder if it was in welcoming or mockery, a star shot across the sky.
“Land ho!”

Yeah, it's funny seeing Guybrush be a klutz and a goof and silly.

“No, sir,” Putra said, annoyed, although she didn’t let it show in her tone. He ate it and didn’t say anything else, so Putra concluded he couldn’t have actually disliked it. When he didn’t like something, everyone heard about it and suffered for it.

Characters: Kate Capsize, Guybrush Threepwood, the Mad Monkey a.k.a. the Headless Monkey
Rating: General
Warnings: None
Words: 510
Summary: Captain Kate Capsize's journey on the Headless Monkey, née Mad Monkey, to make Guybrush Threepwood pay for what he did to her and to the ship -- from the point of view of the ship. To the tune of "Barrett's Privateers" by Stan Rogers.
Additional Tags: Anthropomorphic, The Legend of Monkey Island, Boats and Ships, Filk, Sea Shanties, Barrett's Privateers

Notes: This filk of "Barrett's Privateers" draws on material from the Sea of Thieves expansions A Pirate's Life and The Legend of Monkey Island. A Pirate's Life has a wrecked ship in the Sea of the Damned with several journals written by Kate Capsize, describing her vendetta against Guybrush, salvaging the Mad Monkey to get a ship to pursue him to the Sea of Thieves with, renaming it the Headless Monkey, and it getting wrecked again in the Sea of the Damned. In Legend Smilin' Stan has come into possession of the abandoned ship, which is now "some kind of weird ghost galleon", and replaced the stolen figurehead with a replica. Eventually Kate regains the ship and shows up under Monkey Island at the last minute to help the player defeat LeChuck.

Notes: Let's all just look the other way about the wibbly-wobbliness of their age difference here vs. how I've depicted it elsewhere, okay? You could probably support any particular number from around 3-8 years apart if you wanted to. (Timeline vagueness? In MY Monkey Island? It's more likely than you think.) I published this mainly on the theory of "I would have enjoyed it if someone else posted it, so I'm almost certainly not literally alone." If you got this far, please please prove me right 😅

Title: The Ballad of Hermie, the Giant Sea Pig of Mêlée Island
Fandom: Monkey Island
Characters: Important-Looking Pirates (well one of them), Guybrush Threepwood, other cameos

Additional Tags: Poetry, Ballads
Notes: So there's this on the wall in the Scumm Bar in Escape from Monkey Island:
Screenshot of the inside of the Scumm Bar in Escape from Monkey Island, showing a large creature's skull hanging over the entrance
It's not there in The Secret of Monkey Island, so clearly its origin is somewhere in between that and Escape. And one morning I literally woke up with a verse of a ballad about this creature in my head. Pirates are not a very well-mannered and attentive audience, by the way. (The specific characters given some interjecting lines in this aren't really important, so I didn't tag for them; it was mostly a gag from when I posted this to a Monkey Island Discord server using emotes, and I decided to keep the attributions.)

Return to Monkey Island Part VI: The Return of the Pirate by [archiveofourown.org profile] SchrodingersKat
Fandom: Monkey Island
Pairing/Characters: Guybrush, Elaine, LeChuck, Murray, Voodoo Lady, Captain Madison, Captain Lila, Captain Trent, Apple Bob
Rating: Teen
Words: 23,411

Author's summary: Deep in the Caribbean, Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate(TM), embarked on an adventure to - finally - discover a long-rumored Secret. After the credits of his return to Monkey Island... everything went a little bit different. (A fan-written "secret ending" for Return to Monkey Island)
Author's notes: This story contains major spoilers of Monkey Island 6 (Return to Monkey Island), and minor references to the remainder of the games. Please consider this an alternate ending, or part VI, of Return to Monkey Island. It starts right after the end credits, POV Guybrush. It assumes hard mode / writer’s cut and certain achievements and optional inventory items. There are only two changes to past (Return) game events: Guybrush did not wantonly massacre the Melee Island mop tree (thus the forest animals are still gleefully frolicking about offscreen), and did actually try to free Herman Toothrot (unsuccessfully, as the password turned out to work for only one person at a time).
Author's warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Additional tags: Major Return to Monkey Island (Game 6) spoilers, Alternate Ending, Puzzles, Adventure, Humor, Free Wally

My comment: I left several comments on this in the 11 chapters. Sample: "It's always fun turning game mechanic into narrative. I forget whether it was fic or meta but I saw someone cast "Use X with Y" as a way Guybrush would think out loud, running through all his possibilities, not unlike most players probably do when they don't immediately know what action to take.
LeLoser, LeAttitude lol. They really started something with "LeShip", didn't they? I don't know why we weren't all doing this before."

Quote:
Madison pulled back just as viciously, once more gaining the upper hand. “Like I said, I don’t know! Once Gorey stole this veil for me and distracted the ex-governor, they both served their purpose.” She paused. “Well, besides Gorey composing that modern arrangement for us at our Scumm Bar table. But that was just for marketing, and compensated by exposure.”

“I did notice that,” I admitted. “The guitar riffs were catchy.”
