Quote:
“Melee Island…!” The archer gasped. He looked over his shoulder, there was a twinkle of stars in his eyes as the grin on his face grew more and more. “Oh zounds, do I get to shout the thing?”
Link’s ears drooped just slightly. “What thing?”
“Y’know, the pirate-y sailor thing!” Graham nearly hopped in his place. “Please let me shout it!”
“Considering I have no idea what that thing is, yeah sure.”
“Hee!” Graham jumped and dramatically pointed a finger at the island ahead, with all of its lights glittering against the starry sky and large full moon. A tall mountain with its own light at the top acted as a beacon for the two the closer they got. For an added bonus, and one that Link couldn’t help but wonder if it was in welcoming or mockery, a star shot across the sky.
“Land ho!”

Title: The Ozzie Mandrill Pirate Transmogrification Academy Class of '93 (on AO3)
Fandom: Monkey Island
Pairing/Characters: Guybrush, Elaine, Yangja (EfMI), Mungle (EfMI), Hugo (EfMI), Miss Rivers (EfMI), Original Female Character, Original Male Characters, a few cameos
Rating: General (PG for a little danger/violence, one mildly suggestive scene, and hints at a few swear words)
Words: ~28,800
Summary: Guybrush receives an invitation to a class reunion of the Ozzie Mandrill Pirate Transmogrification Academy. Thinking it might be fun, he decides to go. This might not have been the best move.
Warnings/Contains/Additional Tags: No Archive Warnings Apply, Minor suggestive content, Humor, Locked room scenario, Video game logic, Mild peril, Canon-typical anachronisms, Canon-typical fake voodoo, Bad jokes
Notes: This story was inspired by Stan kicks previously-owned butt, a very old fic posted in 2002 on the no-longer-extant World of Monkey Island site. It's... a rough read, ngl... but I thought the author really missed an opportunity by putting this in a throwaway line and not writing the fic all about it instead: "Oh no! Elaine, next week is the Knuttin Atoll school reunion!" Sooo yeah. Apparently I had to row this particular boat myself; that's the only excuse I have for these shenanigans. Although this went way off my original idea of "school reunion situation comedy", so maybe someone else was rowing the boat. *looks around suspiciously*

Set between Escape and Tales. Involves handwavy attempt at dates because dates within Monkey Island are difficult to reconcile, and handwavy relative geography because that too is often difficult to reconcile (have you looked at the map in MI4? *smh*). Not generally shippy, but has a little onscreen Guybrush/Elaine fluff because he is the squishiest when it comes to her. The "minor suggestive content" is very minor and is solely at the end of the first chapter.

Among Mad People by schrodinger (Teaspoon)
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing/Characters: Bernice Summerfield, OC version of the Doctor past Seven (if I understood correctly), various other OCs
Rating: All Ages
Words: 59609

Author's summary: On a desert world, Benny Summerfield and her team of students are uneasy neighbors with the Interplanetary Mining Corp. But now one of her students has turned up dead, and Benny needs the Doctor's professional opinion. As usual, she's going to get more than she bargained for.
Author's warnings: Swearing [There's little in English, but there were some words I at first thought were made up that might be Hindi (?) swear words, and some like "cruk" that I think are actually made up but whose meaning is obvious in context]

My comment: (on chapter 12 of 16) "I'm not familiar with this companion or really at all with this general era of DW and the Big Finish material (have I understood correctly that you've basically invented an OC version of Nine, since Bernice seems to have met the canon Seven and I think you mentioned two regenerations past that?), but I'm enjoying this anyway as a nice adventure fic. You've really got me guessing who "Boss" is - part of me wants it to be this universe's Master, part of me thinks that's way too pat of an answer. Guess I'll have to keep reading!"

(I hope it's not spoiling anything to say the identity of the "Boss" was never revealed. I suppose it was meant to be just a bit of background for another character, as they are never on screen.)

Quote:
They worked together in silence for some time, mounting samples, staining them and setting them aside to dry. Eventually, Ish said, “By the way, the answer to your question is yes.”

“Good,” his associate said absently, slipping the first of the slides under the microscope and hunching down over the eyepiece. Then he looked up quizzically at the Draconian. “Er, remind me what my question was again?”

“Se-Quirretl-sa-Wiriq is my mother’s clan, and Murasakimaar my grandfather. And that answers my own question. Now I am sure I know who you are.”

“Good old Murray,” the Doctor said fondly, apparently choosing to ignore the last sentence. “How is he?”

“Resting. In his tomb. He was my grandfather of ten generations ago.”

“Oh.” He was abashed. “I'm so sorry. Though I don’t suppose you could have been very close.”

“He kept records of his days. He said that the Karshtakavaar appears only when there is terrible danger.”

The Time Lord bent back over the microscope. “You know,” he said, sounding annoyed, “I once spent a week on Draconia observing the annual visuk migration and not one single terrible dangerous thing happened the whole time. How come no one ever puts something like that in their diary?”

Quote:
When time allowed, she went through the corridors of the ship. Even when the Doctor didn't know her, the TARDIS did, keeping River's bedroom as she preferred, with the growing map in the same hiding place. She'd added more sheets of paper, attempting the impossible: capture multiple dimensions of layered space. The project kept her spirits up when Amy and Rory were nowhere to be found, or on visits when her bed was cold and lonely.

River Song and the Lost Tomb of Ardûn by [archiveofourown.org profile] NancyBrown
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing/Characters: River Song, Jack Harkness
Rating: Teen
Words: 4921

Author's summary: River's professor for her first archaeology class was a self-declared expert on late twentieth and early twenty-first century Earth history. Naturally, she hated his guts.
Author's notes: Warnings: some violence and torture (think Indiana Jones films level of gore). Spoilers: up through "DW: The Angels Take Manhattan"
Author's warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence
Additional tags: Community: trope_bingo, Action/Adventure, Pastiche, Paradox

My comment: "HEE! <- that's me at the end. I can totally picture Jack as an Indiana Jones type. I like how he wouldn't talk to River even kinda straight until he knew she'd met and married the Doctor.
[spoilery and gross bit redacted] And, yiii, having to die over and over like that? O.O"

Quote:
In class, she never once had the chance to relax, or to give the easy answer. No, every time her attention wavered, Professor Jones called her name, making her answer the hardest question he could think of on today's lecture. Lia and Kris were allowed to answer queries like, "Name all four Beatles." When River's turn came, it was, "Miss Song, describe for the class the sociological impact the British Invasion had on popular culture in context of the social unrest of the time period."

"Doctor?" He's not answering her question. But he is helping her.

Harmony by [archiveofourown.org profile] thebunnyinthetardis
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing/Characters: Tenth Doctor (duplicate), Eleventh Doctor, Amy, Rory, Rose, Tyler family, historical persons, OCs; a little Amy/Rory and Tentoo/Rose content, but this is an adventure fic, not a 'ship fic.
Rating: Teen
Words: ~54,500

Author's summary: Life on the Slow Path has never been more agonizing than now. Years have passed since that fateful day when the Doctor left him with Rose Tyler on a desolate beach in Norway. Years for both of them--and while life goes on, he is reasonably sure his has not been the fairy tale the Time Lord might have intended it to be. Now, as fate would have it, their paths are once more to cross, leading them on a journey through Time, a journey in Space, and a journey toward Wholeness. A voice he cannot identify calls. A 17th century cannon ball lands in the garden. A blue box he never thought he would see again lands in the forest. And a Time Lord is running out of Time.
Author's notes: See here if you're interested.
Author's warnings: None
Additional tags: [edited] Drama, Psychological Drama, Historical Accuracy, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Action/Adventure, Humor, Character Study, English Civil War

My comment: "I'll have you know I cried at the end!"

Quote:
He looked back over his shoulder once more at Brentford, burning in the night. They had made their escape, but how many others had not? How many more would die during this bitter, bitter civil war? Brother pitted against brother.
“This isn’t the way it’s supposed to be,” the Doctor said, bitterly. “It isn’t the way I work--we work--it’s all wrong. All of it. We didn‘t make a difference here at all. We didn‘t do anything and just like that it‘s all over? We just go home?”
He raised an eyebrow at that. “It’s far from being all over.”
“Oh, shut up, me,” the Doctor told him. “Remind me again why I followed you here?”
“You couldn’t resist a big shiny, swirly-whirly space portal anymore than I could?”

I have allowed my recs bookmarks folder to get way out of control. So beware the recs list of DOOOOOOOOM!

It's possible I have recced some of these before, yet they reappeared in the folder due to syncing mismatches between three installs of Pale Moon (Firefox), but whatever. If they were worth it once, surely they're worth it again. Read more... )

Whew! What was that, 20? I dunno, I only sort of counted the number of times I pasted in my rec template. I have a few Yuletide recs in other fandoms, but I'll save those for a different post.

edit: apparently this crosspost to LJ failed. apologies to those who see it more than once on DW and IJ.

I've been building these up for a while (there are... 17?), so I'm omitting the quotes from the fics I would usually give.

Sev and Sirius' Excellent Adventure by (as yet anonymous, in [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen)
(Sirius, Severus, Hagrid, PG-13, 8000 words)
Author's summary: Severus and Sirius are assigned a joint detention in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid. Only it turns out they're not in Kansas any more.

My comment: *giggles at the title* Somehow, I don't think Severus and Sirius are that into "being excellent to each other" and "partying on, dudes". (Now having visions of "Sirius O. Black, Esq." and "Sev 'Snivellus' Snape"... oh my. Keanu Reeves as Snape. I think my brain just melted. ...Whhhoa.)

(from here, kinda spoilery with quotes; highlight to read)

"So what about this chap then?" Sirius asked, pointing at the soldier. "Is he one of the good guys or the bad guys?"

Severus regarded Sirius with a half-pitying look. "Not everything is so black-and-white. But if you must have your world compartmentalized into neat little boxes, then if he's with Guillaume -- William -- he's on the side that wins."

I like what this says about the difference between Severus and Sirius's mindsets, and how you had Severus put it. Being on the side that wins - it sounds rightly Slytherin.

"Mary Shelley. A pleasure." She held out one hand, fingers curved down. "I was just taking some air. The men will go on so late." [...] "Are you with Lord Byron's party?"

... Oh dear.

I like that Severus figured out what was really going on :) I do wonder, though, where he learned his Franklin..."

Spinner's End by chudleycannonsnumber1
(Trio, K+/PG, 2280 words)
Author's summary: This is a short oneshot where the Trio is assigned to clean out Snape's house. A little Snape tribute set after the Battle because I had to do something other than TOG.

My comment: "Nice missing scene. It would have helped if something like this were in before the Epilogue. I love the book title 'Somewhat Forgivable Curses' (I LOLed) and the idea about a possible something Arithmancy could actually be used for (calculations on charms that change space)."

It was small and cramped, chiefly due to the bookcases that covered every inch of the walls. Ron whistled impressively, rotating on the spot, his eyes roving over the brown and black leather-bound books.

"How'd you two never get along?" said Ron, smirking at Hermione, who was scanning the room in similar fashion.
