Apparently now in HP-Lexicon, via that latest JKR appearance, and via [livejournal.com profile] slytherykin in this case:

* Severus Snape’s portrait does indeed hang in the Headmaster’s office. Harry had a role in making sure that Snape’s abdication did not effect his place there.
HE HAD BETTER. Jeez, Harry, that's the least you can do!

* Headmaster portraits don’t appear immediately; the person needs to be dead.
Well, yeah, or it would just be weird.

Um, duh? Of course they have to be dead. That was surely the point of asking the question, to get a clue whether Snape was actually dead? Expandrambling on portraits and what it does or doesn't mean about Umbridge not being able to get in the headmaster's office )

All that said, whether at the end of things the castle/office still considers Snape enough a "headmaster" to get a portrait is somewhat of a separate issue. I suppose I'm willing to accept the idea that him fleeing as he does breaks the "agreement", although that's only interview canon. I don't imagine the castle cares much about his whole triple-agent deal, after all. (or, as I put it to [livejournal.com profile] enotsola: the castle is like "oh, breach of contract! and thanks so much for the broken glass, asshole. that *was* a nice window.")

How do members communicate with one another?

Patronus Message, a form of communication developed by Albus Dumbledore, which cannot be interfered with using Dark magic. (JKR Official site.)

Hmm, now wait a second.

OotP p. 830, the infodump at the end:

"You see, when you gave Professor Snape that cryptic warning, he realized that you had had a vision of Sirius trapped in the bowels of the Department of Mysteries. He, like you, attempted to contact Sirius at once. I should explain that the members of the Order of the Phoenix have more reliable methods of communicating than the fire in Dolores Umbridge's office. Professor Snape found that Sirius was alive and well in Grimmauld Place."

It is possible that message-by-Patronus is not what Dumbledore is referring to, here, because he does, after all, say "methods" in the plural. But if he is, then the "but this is touching, Severus" scene in DH becomes kind of nonsensical. Dumbledore must surely already know that Snape's Patronus is (still) a doe, so not only does it not make much sense for Snape to try to prove anything by casting it, but "all this time?" is just a head-scratcher.

I think maybe this is just an inconsistency and that JKR wasn't thinking about this when she wrote that scene.

This icon originated as one of the "outtake" screencaps, but I got this idea for a caption:

Of course, my mind wants to finish this phrase with "...fatality."

ETA: ok, ok. At [livejournal.com profile] fenm's insistence:
