slytherykin in this case:
* Severus Snape’s portrait does indeed hang in the Headmaster’s office. Harry had a role in making sure that Snape’s abdication did not effect his place there.
HE HAD BETTER. Jeez, Harry, that's the least you can do!
* Headmaster portraits don’t appear immediately; the person needs to be dead.
Well, yeah, or it would just be weird.
Um, duh? Of course they have to be dead. That was surely the point of asking the question, to get a clue whether Snape was actually dead?
( rambling on portraits and what it does or doesn't mean about Umbridge not being able to get in the headmaster's office )
All that said, whether at the end of things the castle/office still considers Snape enough a "headmaster" to get a portrait is somewhat of a separate issue. I suppose I'm willing to accept the idea that him fleeing as he does breaks the "agreement", although that's only interview canon. I don't imagine the castle cares much about his whole triple-agent deal, after all. (or, as I put it to
enotsola: the castle is like "oh, breach of contract! and thanks so much for the broken glass, asshole. that *was* a nice window.")
