Come Once Again and Love Me by laventadorn
Severus/Lily, FFN M rating (not for smut though), ~189k words
Author's summary: Severus wakes up in the afterlife expecting something rather different than being almost-seventeen again. Seriously, what kind of game is this? But wait - Lily's come back, too - from 1981? Perhaps it's a second chance... but to do what?
Author's warnings: "rated ~M~ for mature wossnames, with specific warnings for language. In other words: my characters swear to excess. Know that the language is really bad and constant and encompasses pretty much everything you can think of, although NOT racial slurs. Depending on how you interpret HP canon, you might consider it OOC."

My comment: "I don't read a lot of long fanfic, since I really just don't have time or attention span. But this one grabbed me early on and held on through all 188k words. I think you've really got a good handle on young Severus's character, particularly."

Quote:
"Your students?" she said, diverted. "You're telling me—you teach? You?"

"Not any longer," he said, his lip curling.

"But you hate people!"

"And after seventeen years of attempting to instruct countless loads of fatheaded brats who wouldn't know true intelligence if it hit them with a brick, I can assure you I have honed misanthropy to a precision that few have ever achieved."

The Wages of Wagering by [livejournal.com profile] lash_larue in [livejournal.com profile] hp_friendship
McGonagall, Grubbly-Plank, Portrait!Snape, Portrait!Dumbledore, others both living and framed; PG-13, 4700 words
Author's summary: Some rivalries survive death, let the bettor beware.

My comment: "Ah! Where was this in the crack fest a few years back, I ask you? This was hilarious. I read a bunch of bits of it out loud to my husband."

Quote:
“I’ll tell,” Dumbledore threatened.

“If you do I shall hang your portrait in the Divination classroom, Albus,” McGonagall threatened in return.

“Mum’s the word,” he replied.

Cocktail Time by [livejournal.com profile] therealsnape in [livejournal.com profile] hp_friendship
Rita Skeeter, Gilderoy Lockhart; PG-13, 10,788 words
Author's summary: Not many people know this, but Rita Skeeter and Gilderoy Lockhart flatted together for a while after Hogwarts. They stole each other's hair products rampantly. He painted her nails, she transfigured his clothes. She wrote about him, he invited her to parties. It was fabulous, darling. This was Feather's brilliant prompt. And it sums it up, really. But then, things went wrong. [Notes:] When Rita Skeeter was absent from the public scene, following the horrific events at the Triwizard Tournament, speculation was rife. It has been suggested she had a passionate love affair (she’s had many, but they didn’t stop her from writing). Or that she suffered from Writer’s Block (Rita? Really?). Evil tongues even suggested Harry Potter stopped her from publishing. (As if. It was Potter who begged her to return to interview him for the Quibbler.)
Truth is, Rita Skeeter took a sabbatical to write a new book. And hp_friendship gets the right of First Publication. Rita wants to thank her fabulous editor for all her hard work and the friendship mods for having the courage to publish this outspoken, honest account of her years with Gilderoy.

My comment: "Oh wow. This is great. I like the idea of telling an origin story for how Gilderoy got started writing those books of his."

Quote:
We continued our merry round of parties, stories, gossip, and Cocktail Times. And occasionally Gilderoy would write one of his little tales, just to entertain me. They went from strength to strength.

I did notice he had even less money than usual – when the bottles of hair care products ran out, he didn’t replace them but used mine instead. Without asking. But then, what’s a bit of conditioner between friends?

But somehow the thought of a book must have stuck in his head, for a few weeks later he told me his Great Plan.

A Difference in the Family: The Snape Chronicles by Rannaro
Severus + ensemble cast, FFN rated M, ~648k words (yes, you read that right)
Author's summary: We have the testimony of Harry, but witnesses can be notoriously unreliable, especially when they have only part of the story. This is a biography of Severus Snape from his birth until his death. It is canon-compatible, and it is Snape's point of view.

My comment: "I am actually crying here, in a way I don't think I did when that scene happened in the book... and I'm not even sure what to write in this review, just that after nearly 650,000 words I feel I ought to say something (especially since I almost never stick around to read a fic that long - it's like reading 2/3 of the series itself over again). But this was a wonderful experience to go through."

This is too long to go through and pick a quote out of. Let me just say that this fic is a cut, or several cuts, above the usual that start with similar concepts of telling the series from Severus's point of view. I found this author rather engrossing in general and I think I've read most if not all of her entire oeuvre on Fanfiction.net, some 1.5 million words (a good deal of it in August what with traveling to Lubricus and back and spending a fair deal of time just in my hotel room). She does have the odd habit of calling Severus "Russ" in several of the fics, which is something I normally hate, but she offers a better explanation for it than usual (which is to say, she actually offers an in-universe explanation).

Thank you for the fic recs! I loved the first one. It captured canon Snape's personality so well, and made Lily flawed but sympathetic. :)
