No worries; I love much fristing time. I know it's not popular, but once I got into it, I couldn't stop. People who hate much fristing time are really missing out, I think.

...I think I read a porno like that once. In fact, I know I did. He got trapped with a duplicate of himself in his own bathtub-sized cauldron and naughtiness and snark ensued. It was great.

I so don't get Marriage Law. I mean, at least Severitus (for another example of ones of those perennial challenges) is one of those things you could shoehorn into the canon (especially pre-DH) because of the part physical resemblance between Harry and Severus and the way that the time around Harry's conception is all a big mysterious hole in the canon. (I actually don't care for Severitus, it was just a well-known example.)

I am not a canon nazi when it comes to fanfic; I know most of it is non-canon by nature. I don't mind "butterfly effect" AUs, either (in fact one of my favourite fics is sindie's "The Moment It Began", which is a huge epic in that genre) . But I at least want plausibility. Something really contrived is all right as a humourous device and I don't mind so much in PWPs, but when done For Serious, I usually find myself sighing and shaking my head.

Yeah, I found that really anything you could do to get Hermione and Snape together had to be stretching at least one part of canon a whooole lot. (And how I loathed those fics that made Harry and Ron idiotic lumps so Hermione didn't have to deal with them. Or killed Ron, or made him abusive. Or a womanizer who didn't actually care about Hermione anyway. I never did figure out how anybody came to that conclusion... maybe those were fics written early on in the series.)

I think the main reason I've gotten away from fanfic is that I've become a canon nazi. Somehow or other, now that JKR's given us the canon pairings and ending and all (whether I approve or not), I just don't really care to read anything else. But I do agree about plausibility... that's what makes really good fanfic good. I adore fic that explores some overlooked aspect of canon so well that you think it's better than JKR could have possibly written it.

Also, I think my taste got a bit more, er, refined over the years I read fic... Heck, I used to review every fic I read, even the most horrible dreck on ff.net, and I thought the Draco trilogy was awesome. Not so much, anymore. ; )

I only know of what you call "The Draco Trilogy" as a hoary myth told of around campfires to scare young fanficcers. ;) I've never tackled it myself, although I have read a few chapters of "My Immortal". I had to stop before "fatal hilarity" became a personal reality and not just something I heard about the Joker being up to.

Someone once told me that since I started out with Severus/Sirius, my tastes were already "refined" and it was no wonder that I didn't like Severus/Hermione, since most people went the other direction. ;)

I think I started relatively late in life, which may have a lot to do with it. Many of the horrors in fandom are perpetrated by teenagers who later look at back at themselves and go OMG WTF. (I certainly have some OMG WTF original fiction sitting around, even from as old as ~23.) Me, I was almost 29 already when I leapt into HP fandom last year.

OTOH I sometimes run across people whose writing is very impressive that I then am slightly sheepishly boggled to find out are, in fact, teenagers (albeit older ones, ca. 18-19).
