http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ claims "it's just me" that Snapecast.com is down for. I've experienced occasional problems (not on this site, just in general) where there's some temporary problem in the network routing and some relayer between me and destination times out, but in this case I can't even get as far as pinging. The hostname won't resolve for me at all. Is everyone else out there really able to get to it? (yes, I tried flushing my DNS cache.)

(was trying to complete my collection-to-date and burn it off to DVD so as to save a few gig! argh!)

You know, this kind of makes me angry. I do not find this funny at all. No wonder she likes Fred and George. Way to be a jerk, Jo.

Dear archiveofourown.org:

Please to fix it so that when I leave a comment on a chapter of a fic, it doesn't return me to the first chapter of that fic afterwards. It should return me to the chapter I was reading when I left the comment.

Most sincerely, I remain, etc.

Dear people out in the parking lot who are playing very loud music from their car, and having oh, about 20 people dancing and shouting and shit (n.b., this is after 2:30 AM local time):

I'm glad you're having a great time, but SHUT THE FUCK UP. At least turn your music down (I went out and asked them to a few minutes ago, and they did, but somehow the overall volume is the same).

edit: um. this apparently now involves pole dancing? srsly, I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but come on. I got a hold of someone at front desk, but...

ah, hang on, blessed silence.

I mean, srsly. I don't mind people singing and dancing and whatnot. This would be cool, if still a bit annoying, till 11 or even midnight maybe (I'm sure others would be less generous than I on that), given that it's Friday of a Thurs-Sun con. But 2:45 AM???

http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2011/03/etsy-users-irked-after-buyers-purchases-exposed-to-the-world.ars :

The controversy began last week when Etsy flipped the switch on People Search as part of its effort to make Etsy feel more like a social network. Now, when users run a search for a person's full name, that user's account will show up in the search results, even if that person is only a buyer. ... The problem is that, aside from a thread in Etsy's forums (which is almost entirely used by sellers, not buyers), Etsy has not notified users of the change in privacy settings or policy. Previously, users could search Etsy for seller names, but the names of buyers were not exposed as part of the search. Not only are buyers searchable now, they're even searchable by real name if that info is in their account profiles—this is not a required element of the registration process, but there's nothing to indicate that it's optional. ... Even better, people's Etsy profiles and their purchase histories (via the feedback they leave) are beginning to show up under Google results for their names. ... Those who do have accounts on Etsy can remove their real names from their profile pages, and there's also a way to make your purchase history private (Your Account > Settings > Privacy). However, most account holders aren't even aware of the change in the first place, and they're not likely to change their settings without some sort of prompt.

See also http://www.etsy.com/storque/handmade-life/rethinking-feedback-12472/ though.

If anyone is pissed off enough at the Facebook/Twitter Connect thing that they would like to test the waters at Dreamwidth, I have a bunch of codes. You can also usually find codes for the taking at [site community profile] dw_codesharing. Their journal importer is pretty good - it'll even import the comments on all your posts. (Unfortunately that feature doesn't yet work on communities IIRC.) And you can set up the crossposter to crosspost back to LJ/IJ if you want (to be clear: that's all it does, is let you post copies of your posts to your accounts on other journal sites; a free account gets 1 such crosspost, paid gets 3 - "paid premium", a level that doesn't exist on LJ, probably gets more), and when you edit a DW post it'll automatically edit the remote copies. I've actually been posting everything to my three accounts from DW for some months now - you just can't really tell because I don't have it set up to put an identifying footer on the remote posts.

BTW, my own policy on this: I don't have a Twitter account. I have a Facebook account, but I don't actually make use of the thing. I will never crosspost any of my posts or comments to either site. And please for $DEITY's sake I hope you will not post any comments you may make in my journal or on anything I've posted in a community there either.

OMG WHAT

Your phone number may have been made public (to some degree) on Facebook without your knowledge or consent (possibly related to friends searching for you with a certain app - if they had your number, it got attched to your profile, kind of thing; it "imported" from them without them intending to do so, by the sound of it). If you have a look at http://www.facebook.com/friends/?filter=pfp you can see phone numbers of certain of your friends - who may or may not have wanted you to know them! See http://www.facebook.com/contact_importer/remove_uploads.php to "unimport" anything that might have been harvested from you. See also the disclaimer on the phonebook page; you need to disable it on the phone too (have no idea how to do this since I don't have one).

Unsigned review on FFN:

"YO! SAY IT'S SLASH IF IT'S SLASH! I EXPECTED A FRIENDSHIP FIC! Ah!"

Right, because I totally picked "friendship" as the genre, so I can totally see why you'd be expecting that. And the slash content in "Bottled" was just so heavy that I can totally see why it merits SHOUTING about it.

Sheesh.

If there's a warning either way I usually see "not slash", in fact, because the FFN structure seems geared toward it, what with only allowing you to pick two characters and displaying them with an ampersand (rather than a comma) at the top of the page.

[livejournal.com profile] drachenmina, I don't know if maybe you figured this out, but the recalcitrant Snack fic I was referring to in this post was supposed to be yours for your birthday. There's just no way it's going to be done in time. I've only been managing about half as fast as I would have needed to do, and to top it off I lost a chunk of time to a fire alarm incident at work tonight. Here's a sampler, though, as a kind of apology: Read more... )

*thumps Snack drabble series*

Actually I think it has turned into a regular fic aside from the "one prompt per hundred words" factor (I'm using the [livejournal.com profile] fanfic100 table), since most of the "drabbles" fail to stand alone and long series is long, but that's not the problem.

The problem is the boys just don't want to play. I've only just managed to get one of them to so much as wank over the other and it's 4800 words already.

Is there a lust potion in the house?

Argh. We're going to need at least two pinch-hits for [livejournal.com profile] less_for_you, and that's only if [livejournal.com profile] orpheus_samhain accepts my suggested squeezings of two existing gifts to fit the requests of people they were not originally written for, which itself leaves two gifts floating in the ether with no recipients. If not, we're going to need as many as four pinch hits. Augh! Augh I say!

Anybody got any Severus/Lily bunnies they're looking to give away?

well crap.

Quit capitalizing wand woods, people! Only the Elder Wand is so capitalized, because it is a proper name. Every other wand description takes lower case.

!(*&#(!*&!! Why are all the fics on [livejournal.com profile] hd_worldcup so long? How is anyone supposed to keep up and vote on things? I can't even read one 14-16k fic per day (maybe I could, if I read no others). There's no way I can get through four, especially on top of everything else.

And now for one I thought would be funny, but turned out not to be.

the title is totally random, hate writing summaries, r & r XXXActual Summary: What NOT to do in a SevLily fanficXXX

The summary is serious and is meant to be one of the examples of what not to do. I clicked on it out of horror, but this became clear in the first chapter. I do agree with a number of their points, e.g., to refer to Severus as such if it's his POV or Lily's; don't go randomly changing character appearances from how they're described in canon; anyone saying "Sevvy" or "Lils" gets shot on sight; don't write grammar that makes people wish for the soothing balm of a nice Cruciatus. All well and good. (And surely no advice that anyone reading this actually needs.)

On the other hand, they're too full of "this would never happen!!!" admonishments for stuff, as though most people didn't know perfectly well that what they were writing was a mere "what if" scenario (e.g. Lily would never be with any other of the Marauders, but what if she were? Lily apparently didn't have any romantic feelings for Severus, but what if she did?) and are writing these things out of delusion that they could really be for-reals, 100% canon. I mean, chill. Major damage is not being done by all those "wouldn't it be neat if we had them do... THIS!" fics. People are just having fun. It is not worth raising your blood pressure over. Bad writing might be worth a minute's annoyance. Ideas you just don't like? I advise you to roll your eyes and click "close".

For example:

SNAPE/LILY: They-can-not-kiss!!! Period!!! What is between them is friendship, close friendship! This kind of thing is what really ticks me off. Although Lily might have feelings for Snape, they’re NOT romantic.

Right, because close friends of appropriate sexes (whatever the sexual orientation in question is) never experiment physically because they feel comfortable with that person and wonder what it is like, nor do anything physical simply out of pity, nor get involved in anything because their hormones, need for approval, and/or rivalries with others are confusing the issues between friendship, romantic feeling, and sexual attraction. They especially don't do these things when they are teenagers who are cooped up in the same living space 9-10 months out of the year and the rest of the time live near enough to each other to have covered the distance as children.

He was too interested in the Dark Arts for her to like him that way. JKR said so herself in her interview!!! They-can-not-do-that.

I assume this refers to the interview where she said it was possible Lily might have come to love Severus if he had given up the Dark Arts for her, or something to that effect.

If it's so important and certain that they "can't", she should have written that. In the book it doesn't happen, which is not the same as can't. There's so much about the day to day life of every character -- even the Trio -- that we simply aren't told. In any case, Severus and Lily kissing is a LOT less implausible than some of the amazingly amazing crap I've seen. Even if she didn't "like him that way" that doesn't necessarily preclude any shenanigans. I know I've certainly kissed people I didn't have any particular feelings for (and sometimes regretted it later).

And even if you haven’t seen the interview, you can tell by how embarrassed Snape was around Lily. If there were really something going on between them, he wouldn’t be so embarrassed.

Of course, because unpopular, unattractive, "oddball" boys who are feuding with other boys who like the same girls are never embarrassed around the girls they like. They would never wonder whether she was just having them on or be afraid they might do something to scare her off. And certainly nobody ever felt awkward or embarrassed the first time they were in a relationship, or thought they might be, or thought they might want to be. Nah. Never happen.
