Did any of you catch any of the "Comic-Con @ Home" videos last weekend? I thought it was pretty neat they were giving it all away for free (which has not necessarily been the case for the newly-online work-related conventions I've looked into over the past few months), and realistically speaking it was probably the closest I'm ever going to get to SDCC, heh. We watched:
arcanetrivia: black and white portrait of David Tennant (david tennant (b&w))
AAAH YOU GUYS DAVID TENNANT (or his agent, anyway :P ) FIGURED OUT WHERE SAN JOSE IS AND IS GOING TO BE AT SILICON VALLEY COMIC CON AND WE'RE GOING

that is all.

I gotta say, I find the idea of attempting to organize this on LJ itself to be slightly ironic. I suppose they are depending on people to spread it to their Facebooks or whatever, although I'm not sure how many of the target audience are in HP related groups on Facebook, or would normally post this kind of thing to their "regular" feeds, given how sensitive some people are about friends, family, or coworkers finding out their real identity is in fandom. Tumblr, maybe, but I'm not sure what percent of target actually went there rather than just leaving entirely at some past point. It would seem to depend on people having maintained friendships with people even though those people left fandom, or something. *shrug*

--'course, considering how I keep toying with the idea of dropping out of HP fandom myself, I'm not in much of a position to sling rocks.

Chute 212

Has anyone else out there heard of Chute 212? I picked up a flyer for it the weekend before last at PantheaCon (of all places) and was just checking out their website. Apparently their schtick is to apply a "fantasy fair" (e.g. Renaissance fair, Dickens Fair...) approach to a Harry Potter event, so you have the typical convention-style panels and presentations, but then also this more theatrical, immersive setup. (See also MuggleNet article.)

July 2-6, 2014, Santa Clara, CA. That's bloody close to me - I could even drive back and forth rather than staying at the Hyatt for $109 a night plus probably 10% tax. But tickets are $150 even for early-bird registration ("early broom" they're calling it), though. Dunno what it goes up to after March 15th; probably $180-200. Yikes.

(Icon on DW used because Great America, the theme/amusement park the convention center is near, does a serious 4th of July fireworks display.)

Contemplating renting a car for Lubricus. There are conveniently stores and restaurants in reasonable walking distance of the hotel/motel/whatever class it falls in (although I found the loop length a bit tiring for my shins whcih are not used to that much walking, and especially once I was actually carrying back said food and drink items), but I recall last year it would have been handy to have another car when there was an excursion into Seattle. Also getting the shuttle pickup at the airport was sort of a hassle. Hmm.

Misti-Con

Misti-Con 2013

This is in the same place Aeternitas was in 2011 (Margate Resort, Laconia, NH). You may remember that originally there was going to be a second Aeternitas there in 2013, but the main organizer decided not to go ahead with it. I don't know if there's any affiliation or overlap at all between this con committee (I'm assuming there must be one) and Aeternitas.

Too early for me to predict if I'll be going. It was a long haul for me from California, but I'd never been that far east or to New Hampshire so I kind of wanted the experience. (Also, lobster rolls. I'm sure there's little authentic about the lobster roll I had at the Sam Adams restaurant in the airport, but it beat the pants off what I can get out here for... well, the same price I think, but that's vs. airport premium price, so it probably "really" cost less there.) It is a nice scenic place to stay and conveniently, there is both a grocery store across the street and fridges in the rooms (IIRC), so that can help cut down food expenses.

anyway. I dunno yet.

If you, like me, were a fan of Sierra's Leisure Suit Larry series of games, you may wish to help make him come again on Kickstarter. (No relation to the tagline of this year's Lubricus.)

Lubricus

Just registered and paid for Lubricus next summer. So [personal profile] r_grayjoy and [livejournal.com profile] nehalenia, I'm lookin at youse!

*looks*

*keeps looking*

*is well beyond the bounds of comfort or propriety at this point*

I was going to ask to use this nifty pic on one of the buttons I am going to make for [livejournal.com profile] diacon_snack (though I'm not going), but, er. She's dead. Over eight years ago, apparently just a couple weeks after she'd last updated her gallery.

Well, that's a bit of a downer.

p.s. Dear world: There is not nearly enough Snack fanart in you. Make moar so that I don't have to make duplicates. I like having them all be unique! (I'm perilously close to this even with only making 10-15. I tend to get anywhere from 60-75% response, possibly less in this case because they're so few and some of them are kind of old/I can see that the accounts have gone dormant.)
arcanetrivia: a light purple swirl on a darker purple background (general (hogwarts))
I don't have any pictures of my supposed Aurora Sinistra costume. Didn't get a chance to take any before leaving home, and taking pictures of myself in a hotel room that's not so well lit is tricky. Nobody seemed to notice I was in fact wearing a costume meant to be looked at (if not easily recognized), anyway, even when I was carrying either of my props around (star globe or collapsible telescope). I did get a few compliments on my hat, though, so apparently I could have saved myself considerable money, time, and grief by just going with that and eschewing the rest of the ensemble. Given that I don't think I am going to try to find room in my budget for any costumes for Lubricus.

Pics this way... )

Welp, that's all the news that's fit to print.
arcanetrivia: a light purple swirl on a darker purple background (Default)
Dear people out in the parking lot who are playing very loud music from their car, and having oh, about 20 people dancing and shouting and shit (n.b., this is after 2:30 AM local time):

I'm glad you're having a great time, but SHUT THE FUCK UP. At least turn your music down (I went out and asked them to a few minutes ago, and they did, but somehow the overall volume is the same).

edit: um. this apparently now involves pole dancing? srsly, I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but come on. I got a hold of someone at front desk, but...

ah, hang on, blessed silence.

I mean, srsly. I don't mind people singing and dancing and whatnot. This would be cool, if still a bit annoying, till 11 or even midnight maybe (I'm sure others would be less generous than I on that), given that it's Friday of a Thurs-Sun con. But 2:45 AM???
arcanetrivia: a light purple swirl on a darker purple background (ravenclaw (house shield))
Unfortunately [livejournal.com profile] fiendish_thingy's OWL Potions class was cancelled - I hear that he wasn't able to actually be here? - so I'm sitting in my room and trying to cool off because it was bloody hot in the Common Room, where I went to buy a few buttons and take down my notecard of "Free Snape buttons, please take one" because they're all gone. It looks like I possibly could have brought twice as many (80) and still given them all away, so I'll have to bring proportionally more to Lubricus (but I hear there's a cap of 120 attendees there? according to Amanda there were 260 pre-regs for Aeternitas).

I'm pondering going back to the Common Room in a few minutes for the DH 2 speculations/predictions colloquy, but ugh. It's just so hot and stuffy up there, and I'm wearing my uniform jumper/robes today. It's ok outside because it's breezy and cloudy and cool, and not bad inside some places because the a/c seems to work, but apparently not in the Common Room. (I could take off the robe but not the sweater since, being an idjit, I forgot to bring a white bra to wear under my white shirt, and it's um, a little translucent.) Other than that I don't have anything particular I want to do until 9 PM, I think.

Been hanging out some with [personal profile] r_grayjoy, [personal profile] ragdoll, [personal profile] leela_cat, and [personal profile] twilightsorcery (wow, all on DW?), which has been cool, although it involves a lot of sighing and grumbling about how the internet is totally flaky (excellent signal strength in their building, but frequently nothing comes down the pipe. We figured the system is totally overloaded). Bummed an actual Indonesian clove from [livejournal.com profile] droxy last night, which actually didn't kill me as much as I thought it might, despite the fact that I smoked it pretty fast because we were on our way to the Dr Horrible screening/sing-along.

bleh.

Well, I'm here finally, after the flight from Vegas to Manchester being delayed due to weather, and then the "shuttle" (in quote because they didn't get as many takers as they anticipated, so they were running private cars instead of using a van service) didn't come until nearly 8 PM instead of 7, and then we stopped at a liquor store (I'm not that put out about this, because it solved what I thought was going to be a problem of being able to get any wine or whatever if I wanted some - as it transpires there is a grocery store right across the street), and then I went to said grocery store to get dinner and a few snacks for the coming days (there's a fridge in the room - yay! although I did a dumb thing and bought some Greek salad without a utensil to eat it with. Oops). I don't have a way to heat anything up, but still, it should save me some money on meals.

(To whom it may concern, I'm in room 31 in the West area.)

I'll be leaving for Aeternitas in less than 8 hours (!). Since we have two net-enabled portable devices, this means I'll be able to bring the laptop, thus, hopefully will be able to get on the net in airports and while at the con. Buuuut this means there's precious little room for actual books in my carry-on bag, which is my usual method of entertainment on flights (since I am not the type who can sleep on airplanes). I've got a couple of things on my USB stick but I would like some longish fic suggestions. (I've got over 8 hours of travel tomorrow and nearly 10.5 (!) on the return trip.)

Preferred parameters:

Severus/Regulus, /Sirius, /Lily, /Harry, /Draco (threesomes/combinations also OK), but I'll also give a stab at a number of other ships, notably Severus/Remus, Severus/James (...is there such a thing as long, not non-con of this ship?) and Severus/OC (het or slash), or rarer things. Boredom might even induce me to try a Severus/Hermione. ;) Also I might read a Sirius/Regulus.

or Gen. Ya rly, I like a good genfic.

All ratings OK. Violence of R level OK - I don't really want graphic torture and that kind of thing. Please no non-con, bestiality, necro, the usual squicks along those lines. (Dub-con OK.) I have some BDSM and specific kink aversions but don't worry about suggesting something that might hit them; it's not a trigger issue and I know how to not read something that bugs me or skim through bits if they're just incidental.

Bah, that all sounds so picky. Just, whatever! And if I don't read it I don't read it, and if I do I do, whooptee-lee-laaah.

I should really get to bed if I'm thinking I'm going to get up at 4:30 or something.

The trip to Ireland has fallen through for a second year (the organizer cites too-high airfare), so it looks like I'm going to be going to Lubricus after all, assuming there are registration spaces still available.
arcanetrivia: a light purple swirl on a darker purple background (ravenclaw (house shield))
I don't have a paid account on LJ anymore, so this is just an informal poll.

I'm vaguely considering trying to sign up to do a fic reading at Aeternitas.

[ ] OMG YES
[ ] OMG NUUUUUUU
[ ] O.o You're a loony.

If you have actually met me in person, keep in mind the, uh, quality of my voice when you make your selection.
