Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Severus
Rating: G
Words: (Art)
Author's summary: "No spell yet devised enables wizards to fly unaided in human form" (Kennilworthy Whisp, Quidditch through the Ages).
My comment: "Ooh, this is lovely. At first I thought it was just a very nice "success!" kind of thing but I was not prepared for the impact of the second to last panel as I scrolled down!"

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Snape, Minerva, cameos by one or two canon characters (can't tell you who or it will spoil it!), plus a few original ones
Rating: G
Words: 7824
Author's summary: Severus loses a bet, expands his horizons, and learns a thing or two.
Author's notes: Gen. This is set in the summer of 1984 or 1985. Plot-light, but I had great fun putting Sev in this particular situation and sprinkling in a few links to canon.
Quote:
"Dragons don't live in dungeons," Severus objected.
"Not Dungeons with Dragons," Vetiver corrected him patiently. "Dungeons and dragons. And all sort of other things, from what I hear."
"Hmph," Severus said, feeling rather foolish at his overreaction. "Silly sort of game, if you ask me. Exploring my dungeon would take all of six and a half minutes. And that's including the supply closet."

fic rec: Just a Shot Away (Harry Potter)
Sep. 28th, 2018 01:46 pmJust a Shot Away by
RodeoTown
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Sirius, James, Bellatrix, Orion Black
Rating: General Audiences
Words: 5052
Author's summary: The summer at Grimmauld Place isn't Sirius Black's idea of a time well spent. The situation becomes infinitely grimmer when he stumbles upon a possible ploy to invade Hogwarts. The war is brewing, prejudices run deep and suddenly growing up means making decisions that no one in their right mind would willingly face. Marauders era, year five.
Author's notes: This story portrays the Marauders' fifth year at Hogwarts. I tried to stay as close to the canon as possible, consulting wikipedia and Pottermore probably way more than what can be called healthy. However, there are some discrepancies, the biggest probably being the fact that in this story the Marauders become Animagi at the end of the fourth year instead of the canonical fifth. I believe that this achievement and the work that led to it deserves attention of the literary kind that I couldn't fit within the story I wanted to tell without it becoming disjointed. So I made the decision to leave it off-screen in hope that the narrative flows better this way.
Author's warnings: None
Additional tags: Marauders' Era, Hogwarts Fifth Year, Black Family Drama
Quote:
The bike was gaining speed, sending the gravel flying in its wake. Sirius felt the wind biting against his face, but the hand of the speedometer was still barely reaching 50 mph. It wasn't enough. He rolled on the throttle and felt a sudden pang of wild exhilaration at the purring response of the engine.
"Well, theoretically," he yelled over the noise, "as soon as we leave the ground it should be quiet. As of now she's still going Muggle."
"Theoretically, he says theoretically! And I'm going to die. Killed by my best friend's Muggle excuse for a hobby."
"It's a catchy phrase, will make an excellent note on your tombstone."

“Maybe you didn’t notice how he was after you ditched him at the end of fifth year, but I did. Stared after you. Watched you all the time.” Sirius is savage, leaning close, his breath hot and awful on her. “I know what he wanted. Don’t think for an instant he’s keeping you safe out of the goodness of his heart . If he hasn’t done it yet, I imagine it’s only to wait for you to come to him of your own accord. To really win you from James. Or maybe--maybe he’s already done it, and you just can’t remember.”

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Sirius, Regulus, Walburga, Orion
Rating: General audiences
Words: 11819
Author's summary: The almost boring summer. Or, how Sirius ended up running away in the Renascentia-verse.
Author's notes: The title is from the David Bowie classic "Cat people."
Author's warnings: None
Quote:
“There’ve been muggle-born students at Hogwarts as long as it’s been there,” Sirius said, gamely. He knew this was a sensitive subject, but wasn’t in the mood to coddle. They’d had their chance for a quiet evening and had decided instead that this would be better. On their own heads be it. “Despite Salazar Slytherin having his head up his own arse.”
This story is a selection from the authors' renascentia series -- The Regulus Lives AU no one asked for. When we read about R.A.B., we thought the twist may be that Regulus was still alive. We've taken it back to shortly after Goblet of Fire to play with the idea and see how it impacts the storyline. -- currently up to about 135,000 words with the eponymous renascentia still a WIP at about 53,000 words. I read and would recommend them all, particularly making my own road out of gravel and some wine (and if I have to fall then, it won't be in your line) and they were kids that i once knew.

Fandom: The Silmarillion
Pairing/Characters: Maglor | Makalaurë, Elrond, Frodo, Eärendil
Rating: General audiences
Words: 5526
Author's summary: Frodo Baggins and Maglor son of Fëanor have a chance-encounter with Elrond's father Eärendil on the shores of Tol Eressëa, and take him back to meet Elrond and Bilbo.
Author's warnings: None
My comment: "I think this is the one I've liked best in the series so far (I'm going in order). There is something about the presence of the hobbits' voices that throws the Elves into relief, whereas all Elves all the time is grand an all, but can get a bit heavy (somewhat like Frodo and Bilbo's observations about the effect of "more story")."
Quote:
“I’ve heard something of them, here and there, as it happens.” Eärendil’s voice was unhurried, considering. “But I had not realised that hobbits were so small.”
“Yes, everyone comments on it here,” Frodo said. “I fear it’s something I am unable to do anything about, though by now I’m starting to wonder if wearing a very tall hat would help.”
As mentioned in the comment, this is also one story out of a long series, Return to Aman, complete at ~147,000 words: A series of stories about Elrond's return to Aman at the end of the Third Age. All these assume that Maglor son of Fëanor was one of the other unnamed Elves who accompanied Elrond, Galadriel, Gandalf, Frodo and Bilbo on the ship when they left Middle-earth. Point of view is usually either Maglor or Elrond, but occasionally someone else (Celebrian, Lalwen, Nerdanel...) The first story, And the wind as sweet as honey in the mouth, is about Maglor and Elrond meeting for the first time in the Second Age, rather than in Aman, but fits with the overall series otherwise. I'd also recommend the related Mandos series.

I have allowed my recs bookmarks folder to get way out of control. So beware the recs list of DOOOOOOOOM!
It's possible I have recced some of these before, yet they reappeared in the folder due to syncing mismatches between three installs of Pale Moon (Firefox), but whatever. If they were worth it once, surely they're worth it again. ( Read more... )
Whew! What was that, 20? I dunno, I only sort of counted the number of times I pasted in my rec template. I have a few Yuletide recs in other fandoms, but I'll save those for a different post.

slumber in
hogwarts_houses
Terry/various (slash and het, but ship content isn't that heavy), PG-13, 6680 words
Author's summary: Before he got on the train his mother had pulled him into a hug and told him she knew he'd always been special, and she was sure he'd do very well in all his classes regardless of the subject, and his father laughed and wondered how many versions of Abra Cadabra Terry would have to memorise. When he wrote a few weeks later to explain there was actually a fair amount of Latin to remember, his father's reply included a hint of going on to be a doctor.
My comment: "Usually when I open a bunch of tabs off my flist, when I get to a fic over a few hundred words I read the first couple of paragraphs and then either close it or bookmark it for later. Not so this one; I stayed and read the whole thing at once. You've made Terry so very real and I loved the cameos from some bigger players like Draco and Hermione. Rah rah Ravenclaw!"
Arithmantic equations would be his new best friend, he decided. They would never abandon him for Quidditch or try to snog him, he thought to himself, pulling open the curtains around his bed with all intention of flinging himself upon it and burrowing beneath the covers with his lovely, glorious, loyal and uncomplicated equations. It would have worked, too, if Lisa weren't already there, eyes red and puffy and cheeks stained with tears.
