recs from Snapecase

A set of birthdays-through-the-years illustrated fics:

Seven, Thirteen, Twenty-Two, Thirty-Eight, and Fifty by [livejournal.com profile] grooot and [livejournal.com profile] mywitch
Or all together as Happy Birthday on AO3 (not all chapters posted yet, as of this edit)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Severus, Tobias, Eileen, Lily, Sirius, James, Lucius, Draco, Narcissa, Dumbledore, Portrait Dumbledore, one unspecified character
Rating: Creators rated them all G, but the last one shades into PG IMO. Art is all worksafe.
Words: 1800, 2400, 1800, 1600, 1280

Author's summary: Today is Severus Snape's [X-th] birthday. Will it be a good day?

-----

Flight Plan by [livejournal.com profile] sigune
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Severus
Rating: G
Words: (Art)

Author's summary: "No spell yet devised enables wizards to fly unaided in human form" (Kennilworthy Whisp, Quidditch through the Ages).

My comment: "Ooh, this is lovely. At first I thought it was just a very nice "success!" kind of thing but I was not prepared for the impact of the second to last panel as I scrolled down!"

-----

By the Book by [livejournal.com profile] delphipsmith
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing/Characters: Snape, Minerva, cameos by one or two canon characters (can't tell you who or it will spoil it!), plus a few original ones
Rating: G
Words: 7824

Author's summary: Severus loses a bet, expands his horizons, and learns a thing or two.
Author's notes: Gen. This is set in the summer of 1984 or 1985. Plot-light, but I had great fun putting Sev in this particular situation and sprinkling in a few links to canon.

Quote:
"Dragons don't live in dungeons," Severus objected.

"Not Dungeons with Dragons," Vetiver corrected him patiently. "Dungeons and dragons. And all sort of other things, from what I hear."

"Hmph," Severus said, feeling rather foolish at his overreaction. "Silly sort of game, if you ask me. Exploring my dungeon would take all of six and a half minutes. And that's including the supply closet."

Fic and art recs

Wormwood and Gall by [livejournal.com profile] delphipsmith (in [livejournal.com profile] snapecase)
Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, cameo by Lucius Malfoy; G, 3785 words
Author's summary: When Severus is offered the job of Potions Master at Hogwarts, he thinks that perhaps life might not be as desolate as it looked. Whether or not this is correct remains to be seen.
Author's warnings: Angst.

My comment: Great "missing years" piece.

Quote:
"Are you well, Severus?" Albus Dumbledore said solicitously.

"Oh yes," Severus Snape said through numb lips. "Being nearly condemned to Azkaban is such an...energizing pastime."

-----

Grey in the Dark by [archiveofourown.org profile] potionpen
Eileen, Severus, OMC; AO3 rated "general audiences", 4082 words
Author's summary: It's a chocolate-scented August in the Sherwood, and there's a stormcrow at the door.

(this is about Severus buying his first wand, but not from Ollivander.)

Quote:
"And he's a Ministry toady," the woman added, scowling. "The Trace on every bleeding wand he sells."

"Southern milquetoast," Dickon agrees, making a face. "No one'd stand for that nonsense north of Kent. Now, lad, do you want your mam to stay?"

-----

(Love is a) Battlefield by [insanejournal.com profile] veridari (in [insanejournal.com profile] severus_sighs)
Severus/Harry, Neville, Teeny Nagini, Minerva, Draco and BAMF!Trevor; G
Author's summary: It is the annual Staff Valentine's Day Party, where lines are drawn in the sand, enemies are made and Cupid is nowhere to be found. Or is he? Yes, just your typical holiday at Hogwarts.

My comment: LOL! I love all of this. I think my favorite part is either Trevor's less-than-impressed look at his costume, or Minerva's assured delight at pointing out the missed point in Severus's logic...

-----

Five Moments of Doubt by [archiveofourown.org profile] Bagheera
Severus, Minerva, Ginny, Neville, Luna, Pomona Sprout; AO3 rated "general audiences", 5911 words
Author's summary: Five times someone doubted Snape's allegiance while he was headmaster, five moments at Hogwarts during year seven.

Quote:
Ginny swallowed. Most portraits were feigning sleep, some empty, but Dumbledore was awake and present. He raised his silver eyebrows at her, then made a shooing motion with his hand, as if to remind her of her lines. Then he leaned back in the window frame and gazed down at Snape, calm and melancholy, as if he were seeing something quite different from his murderer.

-----

The Things Draco Carries by [archiveofourown.org profile] catsintheattic
Draco, Pansy, Severus, Vincent, Gregory, Blaise, Malfoys; AO3 rated "teen and up", 4875 words
Author's summary: Another pure-blood will recognise you by your blood and heritage, but any commoner will recognise you by your possessions. Seven years at Hogwarts. Seven insights into Draco’s schoolbag.

Quote:
There is a Potions essay in his bag that Professor Snape has marked in Draco’s first year. He has written not too bad under the text, followed by the energetic scribble that is his signature. Knowing Snape, Draco treats the parchment as if his Professor’s script were written in ink of gold.

-----

Last Day at the Mill by Squirrel Patronus
Tobias, Severus; rated Teen, 2016 words
Author's summary: The Mill in Cokeworth is shutting down. Tobias Snape and his son, Severus, have different ideas about the future of the city.

Quote:
He had meant to be friendly, conversational. His own son was a stranger to him. Severus smiled a ghastly grin at him. His black eyes continued to bore through his father.

all the recs that are fit to print

As usual, some of these are a bit behind by now (going back about two and a half months). See tags for what's in this batch; I think there's more gen than usual (has some recs from [livejournal.com profile] snapecase and [livejournal.com profile] deatheaterfest).

various recs

Nine recs, a few slightly stale from holiday fests, others from [livejournal.com profile] snapecase which is still posting, although I could have sworn I saw the author of "Standing at the Fork in the Road" claiming it as hers somewhere O.o but I can't find that now. (Anyway, if any of these are yours and you're at liberty to reveal it, please do say - I may have missed some attributions since it seems not all fests go back and edit in author names after reveals.)

On the table here today we have Severus/Regulus, Severus/Sirius, two Severus/Harry, and a bunch of gen (or nearly gen).

fic rec?

Can anyone point me to AU fic where Draco did kill Dumbledore on the Astronomy Tower? For some reason this is an idea that is interesting me today. Prefer gen, but I'd definitely read Severus/Draco or Harry/Draco (how are you going to swing that, author?). Other pairings, mrr, I'd have to see it. (I wouldn't want to read Lucius/Draco, Voldemort/Draco, or Draco/Hermione, to name three other possibilities that it seems likely to me people might write.)

summaries

I think people have been doing better than usual lately, because it's taken me a while for me to build up even this many, and this only a half batch. (A full batch would be 10; I settled on that as a kind of standard to stop me building up huge pools of way-too-many, and now... this?)

Disclaimer: Do not take too seriously. I am not necessarily saying the fics in question are bad ones, but they had something in their summaries that I found goofy, misused, or amusing in some other way. Sometimes the fics are horrible, but most frequently they're simply mediocre, and occasionally there's a perfectly good one that just had a funny slip-up in the summary.

-----

Hermione is a cheaufur's daughter who is in love with the young son of the wealthy family they serve. A re-telling of the 1950's movie 'Sabrina' with your favorite Harry Potter charaters

cheaufur n. Someone who wears a plush suit in the design of a car-driving manservant.

-----

(The entire summary. This one's not bad, but I was too amused by this idea.)

Another fragment of Snape.

Awesome! I've almost got the whole set. Better start making that Sticking Solution to assemble them with...

Bonus crack!ficlets at the end of this one. )

Have a few recs that have been sitting around in my to-rec folder for a jillion years.

The Right Decision by [livejournal.com profile] unbroken_halo
(200 words, PG)
Double drabble about Severus making the choice and taking the Mark, the first from Voldemort's POV and the second from Severus's.

Highly Toxic by [livejournal.com profile] midnight_ljc
(~530 words plus art, PG-13, mabye barely NWS if a girl in a bra or hints of teenage sexuality are a problem)
Older Severus/Lily (2006). Yummy and tender and sad. I especially like the way he's kissing her cheek and jaw in the last picture. I've had to re-read this a few times before the narrative actually fell together in my head, because it's told kind of backwards, but I love its dreamy quality.

The Raven by [livejournal.com profile] atdelphi
(~800 words, NC-17)
"A play on Poe's famous poem: Filch receives a rather persistent late-night visitor."
Severus/Argus Filch. Wait, wait, come back! It's only a parody, and a hilarious and very well-made one at that. And somehow, even though it's potion-induced and the, er, unfortunate victim of the blast radius is Filch, somehow Severus's insatiability still comes off really hot.

Trusting in Fanfiction by gmweasley
(~475 words, soft R)
Severus/Remus. While we're on the subject of humorous poetry, yeah? This one is original, not parody, but is also quite well-constructed. In brief, I LOLed.
It occurred to Remus one fine day: his past was unrewarding
So off he set to start anew; in short, he stopped Marauding.
He said goodbye to all he'd known; decided to commit.
At last he found (or so it's told) our favourite Greasy Git.

Five things Regulus Black regrets in his life and one thing that he doesn't by [livejournal.com profile] curia_regis
(~1300 words, PG)
This is great in so many ways. I love the Severus/Regulus content, the hints that from the first he doesn't really want to do what his family apparently expects him to, and the quiet bravery. The little bit of Severus expounding excitedly on a potion to little Regulus because he made the mistake of getting him started on the topic is just precious.

Can't Run But by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls
(~5850 words, PG-13)
Gen with Regulus and Draco in alternating sections, eventually dealing with the locket Horcrux. Older stuff again (2005), set after the end of HBP, so canon-shafted now (albeit not that badly). I like the echoes between Regulus and Draco, and Severus gets some great lines in this:
Snape looks over at him sharply. "A coward?" he repeats. "A coward would have exulted at the opportunity before him. Dumbledore was a weak, helpless old man, without even the strength to run. A coward could have killed him."
"So what does that make me?" Draco snaps, his face flushing with shame. "Less than a coward?"
"It makes you a human being," Snape replies shortly.

Players by [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee
(~3500 words, NC-17)
"If Grimmauld Place is a stage, and all the men and women in it merely players, then there really isn't any reason for Snape to take it all so seriously, now is there?"
Again a bit older (mid 2007). Severus/Sirius with plenty of hate in, although it's that special kind of Snacky hate that has clearly got something else going on inside of it. Focuses on how, as Sirius observes, Severus's entire existence is this constructed stage show, and how Severus gets off sexually on that. Characterization is razor sharp on both; I love Sirius's bad attitude and the aside that "Remus isn't any fun any more".

Oh -- oh hi, Severus.

And I do mean Severus.

And a temporally-impossible Draco (i.e. the same age as Severus, at the same time).

And something about Potions I don't really remember but I remember that it happened at all and that's what's important yay!

Care and Feeding of Fred and George Weasley

1. Flee now, lest you become entrapped in the utter mayhem.

2. We are not being facetious.

3. [this was followed by a panicked-looking smear of ink on the parchment, then nothing more.]

Okay, now I'm just being silly. But in the three hours since I put "Care and Feeding of Severus Snape" up on FFN, half the reviews (omg, plural? and enough that I can even say "half"?) have requested I do the same for other characters, which I think a couple comments did on LJ as well. I really don't know if I can. My interest and muse is so concentrated in one black, billowing, snarky place. I can occasionally toss dash off a bit of Sirius, but only if you accept the "cocky, slightly dim pretty boy" version.

*does ritual to summon some other characters into her head*

No, Draco, not you. You stay on the other side of that looking glass for now.

ETA:

*Draco scowl-pouts*

Oh, fuck. Pureblood entitlement FTL. I SAID NO.

*not very used to encountering resistance, he retreats, eyes narrowed, surely to cook up some plan*

...which I hope for his literary sake is better than what he came up with sixth-year. I suppose it will be the gauge of how much he actually wants to start dictating in my head, since I figure lack of genuine motivation was the reason for his total suckage then.

ahem.
