Not sure if I really have an idea forming in my head or not, but --

If you know of or have some favorite fic which really has an "oldskool" flavor, which somehow says that thing about the zeitgeist of post-PoA or post-GoF or post-OotP or post-HBP or just-pre-DH --

And yes, of course the canon facts and fanon assumptions implemented do tend to distinguish, but though I don't wish to present myself as knowledgeable, yet somehow, there's this "flavor" of certain older fics (I've been reading a few selections of old Snack and old waves of Severus Snape Fuh-Q-Fest lately) --

Yeah, I'm partly just curious and partly may have an ulterior motive, so feel free to link things which are not Snape-related (like old Harry/Draco). Context for just when [X] was written will be helpful if not immediately apparent from the link.

Dear archiveofourown.org:

Please to fix it so that when I leave a comment on a chapter of a fic, it doesn't return me to the first chapter of that fic afterwards. It should return me to the chapter I was reading when I left the comment.

Most sincerely, I remain, etc.

Philosophical question:

Should every shippy fic be capable of selling the ship to an "unbeliever" or someone who is lukewarm (assuming a sufficiently open mind on the part of the reader, and not rejection out of hand to begin with)? Or is it okay if only existing fans of the ship are likely to be able to suspend their disbelief far enough to enjoy the fic? Does your answer change based on the likely display setting of the fic, e.g. personal journal, ship-centric fest, fest on some other theme (like the various seasonal things), archive of some sort...?

From the artist's comment on a pic on dA:

I was totally disgusted with the film's rendition of 6th year Snape--or what looked like an emo kid picked straight out of MySpace. I think Sev would have been moderately attractive... but still--you know--Snapish. So I made an effort to make him...well... kissable.

(leaving aside 1. the strict canon interpretation that what you suggest is unlikely, 2. the obvious correction that that was fifth year, albeit he was nearly sixteen and a half, and 3. my peeve about using "emo" as an insult)

Whaaaaaaa you so cray-cray! (That's right, English fails me.) That "emo kid picked straight out of MySpace" is gorgeous, and visually beats what we're given for his adult self IMNSHO. If you think this isn't "kissable" then it's time to call in Dr. House because I just don't know what's wrong with your brainmeats:

I dunno about youse guys, but I can hardly look at that shot without wanting to push him up against the wall and kiss him half insensible.

:P

(Do not take too seriously. Just having a fangirl moment.)

Fanfiction.net appears to have added a character to the Harry Potter section called "Sirius B. II".

...whodaheck?

...Are we talking about Phineas Nigellus's brother, here? Or has "Sirius B." been reappropriated to that person while the "usual" Sirius Black is now "Sirius B. II"? If so, wouldn't it make more sense to say "Sirius B." (as the very well known character) and maybe "Sirius B. Sr." or something?

(This kind of thing happened with "Lily Potter" a while back. They appear to have appropriated the internal ID number of "Lily P." to be "Lily Luna P." and for a while I saw some fics apparently unintentionally pairing Severus with Harry's daughter.)

Y'all are probably aware that Severus/Harry, Harry/Draco, Severus/Hermione, and Remus/Sirius are celebrating ten-year anniversaries this year. Well, I was very pleased to learn from [livejournal.com profile] white_serpent (Avocado) over on [livejournal.com profile] 12am_nosh that the first known Severus/Sirius fic is of similar vintage (November 2000). I'm tempted to want to arrange some sort of celebratory minifest and meta/reminiscences or something, but I don't know if I can.

Yanno what AO3 needs? Roll-your-own RSS feeds out of search queries. I would be a very happy camper if I could get a feed of "contains character: Severus Snape" like I can on FFN.

I made all the Snape buttons for Infinitus on Sunday (still need to label them with their artist attribs and links). Surprisingly, my right hand and wrist didn't hurt that much afterwards, although I managed to bruise my left palm internally somehow, and more annoyingly, I noticed that one of the assembly rings of the button maker has developed some cracks. A replacement is on its way, but it probably explains why I was getting so many squibs (so to speak) - something like 20% of the presses went bad and though I could often tell before I actually pressed the pin-back in and wasted the whole button set, it resulted in me wasting a lot of the protective mylar circles (not to mention printing ink).

But wet blanketry aside, this means there are plenty of free buttons for me to give away. I wound up making more than I had originally planned to because I got so many yes's from artists! Very surprised there; I had sent out a lot of permission requests (something like a hundred? not sure, I'd have to look at home) because I was expecting to get about 35-40% back. Instead I have 55 buttons and that was with painfully whittling all my art choices down to one per artist (I had begun the project with as many as seven from some of my favourites, although I had planned to narrow those to no more than three from any one person). So every button is unique.

I am planning to design a sign or button that points out I have these available - "Free Snape badge? Ask me!" kind of thing - although I will probably also be noticeably jingling and chinking and rattling with a sackful of these, so just find me and ask and you'll have your very own to take home. :) (PROTIP: It happened to work out that there are proportionally few with a younger Severus saying "I ♥ Sev" - if you want one of those I suggest pawing through them sooner rather than later.)

If there are any left over when I come home I will be happy to mail them out to people who couldn't go.

I might be... a little crazy. http://community.livejournal.com/hp_commonroom/2822.html?thread=886022#t886022 lol am I even speaking English any more? This is probably the closest thing to one of those GQMF/BAMF things I've ever done. It's a strange (but fun) mode of communication.

It makes me so happy that the very first in the giant stack of comments on that post (~1300) for "completely pimp out your favourite character [...] Pimp out your bias as much as you want, tell people how cool he or she is or how they can totally pwn someone's ass. This post is for you to become little Dobbys and fangirl/boy over your favourite character", was this: http://community.livejournal.com/hp_commonroom/2822.html?thread=528390#t528390

Aw yeah, he takes over wherever he goes. RECO'NIZE!

At Azkatraz I made buttons for part of the Severus/Lily meetup swag bags, but since it looks like that's not happening, I'm planning to just bring a bunch of buttons of various Severus 'ships and Severus general stuff and whatever (for the last ones I mined my dA favourites and LJ memories for Creative-Commons licensed stuff and asked permission for everything else), and give them out for no reason to anyone who wants them. Raise your hand if you'll be there and would like to find me and get one, so I'm sure to bring enough. (I'll bring at least twenty in any case.)

Regarding this old post of mine that I happened to come across:

A year and 9+ months on, the structure of this part of my bookmarks is still nearly identical to what it was then.

I dropped the estimated reading times because while I figure I still probably read at about 300 wpm when I'm actually paying attention, the number of fics which I skim some parts of or read just a bit of and then decide I don't care to finish has increased, so the estimate isn't necessarily accurate or useful.

The "unexplored archives" folder has vanished because I managed to work through what was there (although it spawned many stories into other folders, naturally); the replacement "fic sites" is various archive sites (such as Skyehawke and Sycophant Hex) I check every so often to see what's new.

Semi-miraculously, and probably due to having more than two weeks off work this end-of-the-year-period, there's currently nothing residing in the <5k and 5-10k folders, although I'm sure that'll change once I go back to work next week.

However, this doesn't mean my "time debt" (as coined in that other post) has decreased; not at all. It's increased. In fact, it's increased quite a lot. (Some of the blame here might go to my getting into Snarry, as I've been trying -- and failing -- to keep up with Snarry Games. I tried once to also keep up with Harry-Draco World Cup but decided I just didn't give enough of a damn and deleted a whole swath of bookmarks which would otherwise have likely added another 400k or so to my outstanding total.)

Ya wanna know the damage?

Then: "65 stories. 2,118,209 words. 117 hours and 40 minutes -- that's nearly 5 solid days."

Now: 178 stories (not counting the one I have open in another tab right now -- a Snarry Games entry, natch). 10,368,248 words. Even taking a higher speed of 400 wpm due to increased skimming, 432 hours plus a few seconds -- 18 days. (18 days even, I note with perverse amusement; 432 is apparently a clean multiple of 24.)

Oh, and "Soul Play", the only resident of "really epic shit" at the time of the old post, isn't part of the Long Count (if you will) anymore, since it's vanished off the net. Nine other stories of 250k or more -- two of them over 400k and one of them over 850k (!) -- have taken its place in that folder.

Yiii.

Is every character getting their own Big Bang now? I've seen Sirius, Severus, Ginny, Hermione, George (I think? might be wrong), I could swear there was a Weasleys-collectively one, and now Draco. Sheesh.

Is there anywhere on the net one can still find [livejournal.com profile] hill_'s art? I have, like, one piece saved through sheer luck, but it's been frustrating reading posts from a year and a half ago (and on back; o woe, why did I not come into fandom sooner?) which are pathetically image-naked.
